- It had to happen. Natural bedfellows. Together at last. King for a Day… meets Grey’s Anatomy

- Given the fact that they will be playing the album in its entirety in Chile at the above festival on 12 November, what better time to revisit this great piece from Metal Hammer on the story behind the album.

I forgot about this, so you can imagine I nearly shit myself when I saw the thing about Billy/The Talking Book in the opening.
It apperas that Patton is partly responsible for the name “Fear and the nervous system”, the band formed by Korn’s Munky Shaffer, in which Billy Gould plays Bass.
Ackording to an article the name came to mind when Shaffer was discovering the movie Peeping Tom after listening to the Peeping Tom album…
“At the time of recording this album, I was, let’s say, ‘feeling unusual,'” Shaffer laughs. “I was getting into lots of books, movies, and music. I had been listening to the album from the band PEEPING TOM, thus I researched the 1959 movie ‘Peeping Tom’, where the band had gotten their name. The writer and the director’s stories were very inspiring to me. After obsessively viewing the film, I discovered that one of the characters (a psychiatrist) in the movie had written a series of books called ‘Fear And The Nervous System’. In the movie, the character’s father would conduct disturbing and frightful experiments on his son, then film and document them.”

Never saw that video, heard about it though. I’ve seen enough fucked up shit (and I do mean enough) to probably not be phased by it, but hell if I’m gonna purposely go looking for it. I don’t dig snuff films mmmkay.
Now I’m kinda curious though.
Kneel before Zod Tshirt and a FNM sign
Video Macumba! I could’nt watch the whole thing myself…
You know….that Video Macumba “BULLSHIT” makes me think a little less of Patton. I am sorry that I ever saw a second of that video. I am going to go with the idea that he looks back on that editing experience with a little bit of shame.
I’m seriously considering showing up at the local #OccupyWallStreet protest this weekend with a sign demanding that Faith No More make a new studio record.
That or a sign that reads “KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!”
Still debating the merits of each message ….

I thought the film snippet in the beginning was pretty illustrative: my take is that it’s trying to say the idea overpowers the form of expression.
Speaking of ideas, what struck me the most about the interview is the frustration Patton has over trying to find the best conduit to communicate his ideas to his audience… and yet after 2 years of paying way too much attention, I still often have no clue what he’s getting at 🙂
I think his snide, ungrateful comment is more aimed at people trying to figure out his personal motivations, and not those who just want to interpret what he’s attempting to express.
That interview by Gonzalez Frias was good, but, I felt the same point was laboured from various angles for about half the interview. I got it the first time – commercial/business interference maligns the creative process and results in impure and compromised art.
The repetitive film references offered no further insight. The concept of music providing a visual/cinematic reference has been done to death.
I really liked when they spoke about Morricone and when Frias spoke about how he interviewed the master himself. Patton was truly awestruck and really opened up about how he completely and utterly loves Morricone – his body language and facial expressions said more than any words could ( I thought he was gonna cry for a second there!).
Interviewing Ennio would be quite daunting. If you have seen him interviewed before, he has a real presence about him. He’s a no bullshit guy and could be mistaken as arrogant. Very direct in his responses. But I’m starting to digress so I’ll stop now.
Overall a good interview if only for a unique approach and some snippets of some deeper understanding of where Patton is coming from… but in the end like he says: “Listen to the fucken records and shut the fuck up.”
Finalmente!! Mondo Cane in Australia.
My folks, both Italians who brought me up on the likes of Gianni Morandi, Adriano Celentano, and Luigi Tenco are fans of MC. So after torturing them throughout my teens with FNM, Bungle etc blasting on my stereo, I’m gonna shout ’em tickets to the show. Indeed, my coolness factor has gone to shit but I figure a few Italians in their 60s at the show will give it a bit of added credibility.
I agree, great interview…really nice to see a more relaxed Patton, felt a bit like having him in my living room.
Wow great documentary too. Liked the end. Thanks.
Any interesting reviews for the Fantômas dvd?
I just watched that interview with Gonzalo Frías. Great stuff at the end. What is that piece at the end from? Gonzalo Frías made another Patton TV special?
Thanks for posting the one with the documentary outtake at the end (45:00+). I’d buy it for the outtake alone :))
The “Lips” comment is classic!
GREAT interview! One of the most introspective I’ve seen with Patton…

Thanks Rob, I didnt know it was available. Great show.
Here’s a short account of the Mondo Cane tour, from an insider… And hey Aussies, you may want to read through to the end 😉

The entire Mondo Cane show from Chile here:

I downloaded the HD version. A wonderful show!
Does anyone have a straight forward link so that I can download the Mondo Cane show in Chile. I can’t figure out the one on FNM4ever!!!!! Please help…..
“Five Seconds” in a porn flick… now that’s irony.
i have to ask…what porn was it? 😀
Dunno why I added the word “track”, whoops!
It’s been a few years, so I’m having a hard time remembering… it was either track Five Seconds, Mojo, or YNS (could’ve been something else, but only those ring a bell somewhat). It was so out of place, seriously.
Yes I would like to know as well lol
@Jones…what Peeping Tom tune did you hear in porn?
Well… I’ve heard Peeping Tom in porn before, so why not some FNM?
Really though, I did, and it was very awkward and just… weird.
@ nottapekim: agree with you entirely.
Pointless and stupid.
May as well play Caralho Voador over some soft core porn. Amazing!!
theres a ton of great movies that song could go well with. not some generic 00’s era TV series fodder.
lets put “The Morning After” with a bunch of clips from Twilight…
Sepultura “Roots” sounds like “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” by Drowning Pool…

forgiveme for asking but what is the point of the greys anatomy clip?
I love 99% of all Patton’s projects or collaborations. But Bungle occupies a particularly important place for me. So do FNM. Oh well…
But damn it, I would like to ear that project Bungle had of recording an entire record based on the periodic table of elements where each song represented an element! Can you imagine that? The Bungle’s guys, all together, were extremely audacious. That’s fascinating!
I agree with Kevin. I tend to eat up Patton’s shit like a hot fudge sundae, so maybe I’m just biased, but I’ve really enjoyed listening to all of his different projects equally (for the most part).
That’s why I love Patton, because he can go from something like Mondo Cane to screaming onstage with Sepultura. And maybe it’s because it doesn’t happen very often, but there’s something kinda refreshing about seeing him doing something a little more heavy and straightforward like this. All the other projects are great and all, but sometimes it’s just great to see Mike Patton rock the fuck out.
I’ll never understand the whole “Mr. Bungle is better than Faith No More” or “Faith No More is better than Mr. Bungle” thing. Both are/were amazing bands in their own rights and completely different kinds of bands.
Yeap! Mr.Bungle 2.0
F__k yeah, now there’s the Mike Patton I love! Screaming his head off with Sepultura! Great. Amazing he’s still into that good s__t. Hope being 43 doesn’t make it harder for him to perform the screams like he used to. What a voice, nonetheless.
Anyway, for those who don’t know, Trevor Dunn was with Mondo Cane in Argentina, along with… William Winant. That’s right! Little Trevor Dunn, along with the fat guy (you rule Will) who was touring with Mr. Bungle on their California tour as the percussionist. First Trey, now Trevor and William… bring back Danny Heifetz and McKinnon for a long anticipated better-than-faith-no-more-reunion Mr. bungle reunion!
