Movieweb have just published an extensive and revealing interview with Faith No More singer Mike Pattonas his latest film score The Solitude of Prime Numbers is released. The whole interview is well worth a read, but, as is our wont, we have extracted a few choice cuts of direct Faith No More relevant below:
Now, you guys are in the midst of rehearsing for the upcoming Faith No More shows. Can you hint at any of the surprises that fans are really going to get a kick out of this time around?
Mike Patton: Um…Yeah, there are a couple of new things. But those are all better left as surprises. We are playing some stuff that we haven’t ever played live before. The most unique thing we are doing is a show in Chile. There, we will be playing King for a Day from front to back. We are doing it with the guitarist that played on that record, Trey Spruance. We have never played live with him before. So that will be pretty exciting.
Are you going to play some of those King for a Day B Sides during this show? Or is it going to be straight through track one to I’m Just a Man?
Mike Patton:I think we are just going to do front to back. I think there maybe…We are doing a tune we’ve never done from that era. I guess that would be a B Side. I don’t know if we released that at all…I don’t know (laughs)!
Last question, which I know people keep asking, and we get the back and forth from Roddy and Billy Gould all the time. Do you think there will be new material, a new song, or possibly a new album from Faith No More sometime in the future?
Mike Patton: Well…There are no plans. That is all I can say. We have basically talked very little about it. I think that is because we are really just getting to know each other again. And we are getting to enjoy each other’s company again. We are taking it, and appreciating it for what it is. We are not trying to look too far ahead. That is the honest truth.
would it be asking to much for FNM to arrange / release all 300 of those songs that Billy has ? I mean all at once, like a 30 disc set……
BTW, I can’t believe they’ve never talked about it…it makes no sense that they wouldn’t discuss this.
Ok, I’ll settle on a compromise of tour vs album. How about play a show that includes 10 tracks of new, FNM written material, record the show and release as a DVD and CD? mmmkay?
HEY MIKE AND FNM! HAVE A CHAT! WE ARE ALL WILING TO PAY MONEY FOR A NEW FNM ALBUM AND US TOUR!!!!! COME ON OPEN UP THOSE POCKETS… WE’LL FILL ‘EM!
Really hope they do Absolute Zero! Can’t wait.. Off to South America, let adventure 3 begin!
According to aussiemusicfan, they’ve never played “smaller and smaller” or “Star AD”, believe me I’ve checked!
ive never heard star ad live
It won’t be Star AD as they did actually play that on the KFAD tour (briefly). My money is on Zero.
I don’t. I hope it’s something nobody has ever heard before.
@admin, I hope this rumor is Absolutely right.
Also…I doubt they would really need to sit down and ‘try’ to come up with stuff. Billy says he has about 500 songs that could all be FNM songs, and he wrote alot of stuff with Jon as “Castro Sinatra”. If they just got in a room and listened to Billy’s stuff, they would add their ideas and you’d probably get a triple-album in a few weeks. It would just take wanting to do it more than everything else they have going on.
Remember, he hasn’t rehearsed with them yet and knows they’ll be doing Star AD. My guess is that Star AD is the new song he’s thinking of but can’t remember if it was a B-side or not.
Saw a rumour on Twitter that it will be absolute zero
I think that it is going a little old, two years later, to not really have a definitive “yes or no” when it comes to recording new material. I think it was Billy himself who said that if they’re going to stick around, eventually they’re going to have to introduce something new. As I’ve seen others mention before, it’s kind of hard to believe that those five guys can’t be inspired to write something new together.
As for what B Side from the KFAD era Patton is referring to, I really hope it’s “Absolute Zero.” Behind “The Cowboy Song,” it’s my second-favorite FNM song that was never part of a proper album.
And I was mostly referring to the b-sides/covers thing because they don’t need entirely new, original material for their shows to be different.
Yeah, I’d honestly prefer a full-fledged tour again rather than a new album. Shows are the best parts of music, so… yeah, hearing them do the same songs would kinda suck, but an average album has around what, 11-13 songs on it? They could easily fill that out with b-sides and interesting covers, + take some creative liberty on some songs and do more improvisation with it.
New Fantomas, please! it’s been a while. It’s annoying to hear the same thing over and over about FNM… but honestly, new material is something I really wouldn’t care for. Sure that would be nice, but instead If they could play many of their rare tracks, plus do a US tour, that would be good enough for me. But I deeply wish for something that has to do with Bungle again; Fantomas as well, please, please! Well, okay… to hear what FNM would sound like today, especially since Patton’s experimental abilities have grew incredibly since Angel Dust, it would be nice for new material.
“Malpractice”, “Crack Hitler”, “Jizzlobber”, “The Perfect Crime”, “The Morning After”, “Kindergarten”, “A Small Victory”, “hippie jam song” and “Falling To Pieces” – if they could play all these live again (or some for the first time) that would be the greatest thing!
IMHO myself and a lot of fans have supported Mike’s solo and side projects for years now, the majority really want a new fnm album. I don’t think he owes us a new album, but I think he should at least try the process of coming up with something (fnm) new. I just can’t see how a guy who is so experimental wouldn’t want to scratch that itch of what the new ideas or songs from fnm would be like today.
Good interview aside from the questions that get asked over and over and over again. Disappointed about Crudo being shelved, even more disappointed about Nevermen not coming out soon, but I know it will be worth the wait. Adam and Mike are my two favorite male musicians, so I still can’t really get over how cool it is that they’re working on something.
Christ he must be tired of people asking him that question. If it happens it happens if not meh..I`m happy I got to see them.
No talk of a new album because the guys are still “getting to know each other again”.
For Christ sake this reunion has been going on for 2 years now. I’d say they’re reacquainted enough. New FNM album pronto!!
