i must say I am a Patton lover as most are. Although, my love and appreciation for Chuck has grown over the last 5 or 6 years…..much respect for that man. but, I have to say, Jim Martin..just doesn’t do it for me. i know, I know…founding member blah blah….great guitarist…join the club….but there are so many instances where he just doesnt seem like a team player….I am not challenging his musicianship…..undeniable. The guy just seems like a douche. The same can be said for MP obviously….but seems to work for him. none the less…Jim is indeed a great guitarist….
I guess this is what we’ll have to do to pass the time…it’s kinda like Fantomas:
I guess we are heading into a proverbial nuclear winter for FNM news and activity…I can’t take it that there are musicians this talented, still obviously flowing with good ideas (based on their other projects), still playing at a high level (as seen in their recent performances), and physically healthy that are going to deny everyone more music, simply because, as Patton said: “Naaaah fuck it”.
It sucks man, it really sucks.
benrun-You make some good points…as much as I love Patton, I’m a huge fan of the entire band and the chemistry that goes into both creating music and performing…I know Patton is wild and interesting to watch onstage, but I always get annoyed when the cameras skip the rest of the band when filming them….
And that’s a good point about Jim being professional and playing the gigs…these days, band members are just as likely to quit mid-tour, but Jim soldiered on during some difficult circumstances…the show I saw with him obviously featured a more stoic dude than their later axemen, (which may just have been part of his stage presence) but he rarely missed a note, and made it to every gig, no matter what was going on between him and the band backstage (and sometimes onstage) Good for him and the guys for making it work…bands could learn yet another thing from FNM.
Chris T,
It’s cool to see all the fans on here lately who aren’t just Patton fans but true FNM fans. Anyway, I asked Jim a few questions, but the one about Anne’s Song was something like…”Do you find it ironic that FNM’s best guitar solo (argueably) is in Anne’s Song instead of a heavier song?” I also thanked him for playing so professionally all throught 92-93 when by all reports his heart wasn’t in it and for laughing off all the insults thrown his way by the rest of the band…I don’t recall him ever saying anything truly negative about anyone.
“Can’t wait to see how Jim responds to some of the questions! I put the one in about his guitar work on Anne’s song.”
Just curious benrun, what question did you ask about his guitar work on that song? Personally, I’ve always loved the solo he did on it.
And on the subject of Introduce Yourself, I have always absolutely loved that album. Hell, I’m the rare breed of Faith No More fan that loves the first two Chuck albums just as much as the last four with Patton.
Puffy and Bill are the consistent element that makes the FNM sound, and I agree it was well established, with their ‘schtick’ on WCAL. The singers and how they sing essentially divide up their albums into the 3 phases of the band. I also agree about the production and mix being a big part of why I love that first album. I’m glad it was re-released eventually which improved the sound over my cassette. I mostly saw Patton as kind of copying Chuck (badly) for most of TRT tour until his style began emerging in 91 when he figured out how to resonate powerfully without constricting his pharynx while nasalizing everything (or maybe he just had a 3-year long head cold?). The band grew musically and creatively in their later years, but good songs are always good songs. The Beatles grew musically after they broke up, but sometimes musical dexterity doesn’t override good melodies. I’m 34 as is my friend, and we both appreciate the songwriting that went into some of the earlier songs better than the later, but we both also see KFAD as a masterpiece even though a big part of Patton’s influence is to strip away melody and write more abrasive, dizzy-ing kinds of songs (I guess what would be termed the beginnings of nu-metal??). I just notice how when Spirit, WDYB, The Crab Song work their way back into the set, they are the highlight of the show. I’m dying to hear Kindergarten again, and I liked hearing RV and A Small Victory again, but they just don’t move a crowd as much.
King Col, I remember my dad used to complain about FNM saying (no matter which album it was)…I really want to like them…but that singer, uh! (He especially liked ‘Edge of the World’)…but he HATED the first Bungle album with a passion! “GET THAT CARNIVAL SHIT OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!”
God i don’t see how anyone can compare IY to AD !!!
Totally different for one but AD defiantly pushes the boundarys when it comes to uniqueness musically.. I mean the band had grown in talent in the 4-5 years between albums.
AD should be put on a pedestal ahead of not only any fnm album but in rock music in general.
But again different strokes etc .. I mean the older folk will prefere earlier styles. Try convincing your dad AD is any good 🙂 he’ll opt for Neil diamond every time.
I too find mike annoying on TRT and is an album I’d not really reach for unless the songs are performed live after 92 ..
I made the point on previous posts that in AD you can really hear the mr bungle vibe which suggests that unlike TRT which he prob went along with, he really was given more say in later albums and fnm became a different band which is the band i have loved all these years
interesting read. I don’t get why so few people like their first album though. contrary to what the article says, they had definitely developed their trademark sound on that album already. hell, the song WCAL was already on it, and is what eventually turned Introduce Yourself to a hit. I actually prefer it to IY, and it’s probably my favorite FNM album after AD. it’s the only one that comes even close to being as dark and moody, and I enjoy the production on those two albums more than any of the others.
Benrun,
I completely agree with the article, as I wrote on the site. Great songs, all 5 members contributing, and the best balance of dark and humor. I take every song on the album (almost) over anything on TRT, but especially Anne’s Song and The Crab Song (although that one didn’t reach it’s full potential until Patton did it live). AD challenges it for uniqueness, but IY in 87 stretched my brain more than AD did in 92. But comparisons such as these are trivial considering all 6 albums are in my top favorite 1% of all albums. It is funny to me though that people find Chuck’s voice annoying without finding Patton’s voice annoying on TRT!
Can’t wait to see how Jim responds to some of the questions! I put the one in about his guitar work on Anne’s song.
The only Chuck albums that I would call superior to FNM’S later releases with Patton are, well, both WCA and IY; I’ll take these two classics over Album of The Year. And I’m amazed that faithnomoreblog managed to get in touch with Big Jim Martin… that’s great! Hope they ask him how it’s feels to be 50 and look better than any of the fatties in FNM 🙂
So the Introduce Yourself reviewer would take Anne’s Song over almost anything on The Real Thing? Going to have to disagree with that. While there are some really strong songs on the album, Chinese Arithmetic and The Crab Song, Mosley’s vocals never did it for me. I would love to hear FNM rerecord the album with Patton on vocals. Hell, I’ve wanted the first two rerecorded for years. Would love a Patton studio cut of Why Do I Bother.
80s era FNM was total fucking shite, and not even just because Chuck has no vocal ability to speak of (because I also consider The Real Thing to be a crap album), but because it was so terribly 80s that my brain couldn’t handle it.
