And here is Roddy’s thoughts to Rolling Stone:
It feels apt that the first track we’re releasing is ‘Motherfucker,’ a song about accountability. Basically we’ve created, recorded and mixed a new body of work by ourselves and we’re releasing it on our own label. It’s a huge deal for us to only have ourselves to answer to at this point in our career and the song is about that, where the buck stops via the basic imagery of foie gras production, bondage. . .y’know, stuff like that.”
Pre-order the digital version at iTunes or other outlets depending on device.
Jacob, I agree, Roddy sounded a little more into it in the live version. Truth is that all FNM songs sound better live anyway….the songs grow live and become different beasts.
Loving it. It’s an odd choice for a single, but this is FNM we’re dealing with. Somehow it feels just right. And it would make an awesome opener on the album.
As for the production, it’s really good. Atmospheric, dense and raw. The only little complaint I have is that Roddy’s vocals sometime sound a little too “read”, as if you can almost see him reading the lyrics from a paper.
Well you’re in luck. I heard a rumour the album will have more than one song on it.
I’ve loved pretty much everything faith no more and Mike Patton have done, FNM were the first band I saw live when I was 16 too. I was really looking forward to the new stuff but I don’t think this song is much good.
actually, change “a cup we made from bones”, to “a cup we made of bones”
Awesome lyrics Roddy! Here’s what I get:
Motherfucker
Force-fed more than we’d eat in the wild
Grazed on a mash that could suffocate a child
Bloated, promoted in an ode to pomp and style
Moistening the feed while we choke upon the bile
Cornering the market on the geese without their bones
Hushing out the public in a strike without a drone
The cage became collapsible, our sticks equipped with stones
Get the motherfucker on the phone, the phone
Hello motherfucker, my lover, you saw it coming.
Set aside the scruples in a stratagem of strain
A smallpox-laden blanket, invisible with stains
Inoculated bastards, bloody pecked vein
This temper has a hold, this temper has a hold
We took the second sip from a cup we made from bones
The first it was a ruse, a trick so aptly thrown
The truth is that our youth was a carpet laid of stones
Get the motherfucker on the phone, the phone
Hello motherfucker, my lover, you saw it coming
Goodbye motherfucker, my lover, you had it coming
Get the motherfucker on the phone
It’s like seeing (hearing in this case) an old friend and picking up right where you left off.
Fucking..vicious.
Love it. Nice to have them back.
A friend of mine told me he didn’t like it and I said “That’s OK. I love it.”
I have loved FNM since Epic, and even though I didn’t dig this tune live all that much, I am really enjoying the space and mood they create with the studio version.
I like it a lot and I was always a fan since early 90´s.
Great tune, definitely a grower. People are overreacting because it doesn’t sound like they did in the 90s and it lacks complexity.
I should never read comment sections. I realize that everyone has the right to their own opinion…but man. I can’t help getting worked up over all the negativity surrounding this tune. Love what they did with Roddy and Mike doing the verses, and the chorus is just typical FNM….great tune great band!!!! Can’t wait for more…
