I completely agree. I’m willing to bet sometimes he may have been having monitor problems on that past tour, but other times he could just note stay in key. I think some of the South America shows in particular were rough, but then he sounded fantastic in 2011. I remember I wrote something critical of his vocals back then and people were pretty quick to insult me and tell me I was out of my mind, but I’m glad he has been able to improve so much. Even when he is out of breath here on Ricochet, he’s still got such great control. What I had talked about some last time was that a slight weight gain seemed to have been hurting his voice and he appears to have slimmed down again. The weight really hurt during the Tomahawk tour too. There’s a biological correlation there (I work with singers). You can do some different things with your voice when you are a little heavier, but you lose some things too. Anyway, the whole band sounds really great in these clips. I for 1 am glad they are playing clubs and not stadiums…the shows are going to sound way better that way.
Interestingly Patton’s FNM voice seems to have improved quite a lot over the past few years. It was starting to take hold towards the end of the reunion tour, was noticeably better at the Hyde Park show and is just as good (if not more so) here. The performances of ‘Ricochet’ and ‘I Started Joke’ from 2009 sound absolutely horrible by comparison.
