Faith No More released the studio version of Superhero – the second single from Sol Invictus – today via BBC Radio 1 and Marvel and YouTube. And here is all you need to know.
The song
The reviews Spin:
It’s a strikingly scummy track, featuring the gritty slog of a distorted bassline and Patton’s prodigious vocal range on full display as the band runs through its typically dramatic twists and turns.
Bloody Disgusting:
The song is a driving, mid-tempo rocker that has that epic grandiosity we’ve come to know and expect from FNM.
Metal Injection:
I’m loving the super roomy production for the song and the big, groovy drums on the track.
Metal Sucks
It sounds like FNM picked up exactly where they left off with ’97’s Album of the Year.

Just the interview
“Superhero” actually just started from the sound of the song, where it has these pounding drums and it has like this throbbing kind of pulse, and we just called it the “Superhero” song. Because, a lot of the ways we write we visualize things.
Actually this is kind of interesting because we’re probably a unique band in a way. While we write music we’re talking about chord changes and different things like that. What we do is we describe scenes together, and we can visualize the scene and the music kind of comes. We kind of make movie scenes for movies that don’t exist. “Superhero” was one of those where it was definitely a superhero comic, I mean that was just the vibe of the song, and when Mike came to me writing words about it, we were already calling it “Superhero.” So it’s kind of like in the DNA; it’s a comic strip.

So this song has elements of angel dust and kfad. It feels complex, but at the same time, straight forward, commercial, better.
How is this possible?
I think it is because they were inspired again, without pressure of any kind, maybe happy for doing this again.
Whatever the reason is, I can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.
Imo this will be their best album to date.
I’m very happy for their success
This song is incredible. GOTDAMN.
Don’t see any pending from you KingCol
Ps : my comment awaiting moderation ??? That’s a first. Have i been bold?
Anyone think the guitars have a similar undertone to desert search for techno Allah ???
I’m soooooo more impressed with the studio version of this which is unusual for me as i much prefer their live versions mainly because of the added onstage energy injected into each track
Nah I just rechecked now. Cd is up on Amazon. Pre order is good to go. now I have both the CD and digital on pre order…probably overkill but whatever.
Also is it odd that fnm release a song called superhero on marvel that only had one discernable reference to a character via the line “s on your chest” when superman is a dc character?
Just pre ordered the vinyl album and didn’t get superhero. I guess it’s digitsl pre order only
Just got superhero on iTunes! What’s up everyone.
Strangely enough this reminds me a little of ‘Another Body Murdered’. It might be because of Patton’s growling/screeching and his background vocals in the chorus.
Sounds right for the most part. I’ve got this verse as:
“Like an American drug, Makes a mean cock crow,
‘Cause the cowl which I’ll appraise, makes a superman a-glow”
In any case…love it. Can’t wait for the album.
Ben,
I’m listening to the other new chuck track in between every 12 superhero listens. More details very shortly on this one.
And you all can think I’m strange if you want to…but I still love Chuck’s new song Ericalution more than the new FNM songs (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE as much as the rest of you), but hopefully that helps it sink in how great this Chuck song is…it’s more “musical” and a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure that there are some other great ones coming down the line if he can just get help to get on the road to fund the album!!!!!
Crikeys! Go to bed admin!! Superhero will still be here tomorrow! Thanks for all your hard work with these updates!!
It’s definitely “tugging” on your cape in the live versions.
I could still go either way on this:
Never follow one day vs Know their father one day
‘enemy’ still sounds like ‘animal’ to me
And the “superhero, such a her” part might end with “falling, falling” after all the flyings
Thanks so much for these. Updated as a kind of combo effort. You have better ears and definitely better audio output than I can manage at 2am!
Actually now I hear:
The sun rise is hear to save us now
All it’s sorry rays
Storybook years
Sweet memories
Wash it away
so kind of a combo of both
sounds like
Tugging on your cape
And
The sunrise is here, to save us now
For the record this song will be played ad nausium in the Esper household…and then played some more. Brilliant.
I think my lyrics in the bridge are closer, also, itunes doesn’t seem to have it yet. So the kid with the mask is the album cover? That’s pretty cool, I was thinking it was going to be the back cover of single cuz it has a similar theme.
