I think I share the love for Kindergarten some have expressed, having Free Concert in the Park (old Angel Dust bonus disc) as one of my first items of FNM-ery has given me a particular fondness for the live version, ditto Mark Bowen which I was blessed enough to see them play at Download. I’d love to hear more from Introduce Yourself, I reckon R’n’R, Faster Disco and Blood would be absolute belters live nowadays. I don’t get why they’re happy to throw in covers like I Started A Joke yet somehow Absolute Zero, Cowboy Song or Perfect Crime don’t seem to ‘count’? Especially when considering how amazing Absolute Zero sounded at Maquinaria.
I’d gladly jettison Easy and Epic at this point for pretty much any other track but I can appreciate why they’d stick to their guns on those, especially in the UK. My hat goes off to Mike for having the commitment to sing the lyric “It’s so groovy it’s outta sight” night after night.
Now they’re ‘back’ back and – hopefully – likely to tour the same areas again and again I expect they’ll mix it up more each go round. Having seen four of the seven (?) 2.0 UK shows they’ve made a point of veering away from the tried-and-true set and thrown in a variety of deep tracks like Take This Bottle, Mark Bowen, Zombie Eaters, Greed, Pills For Breakfast, Malpractice, Why Do You Bother, Chinese Arithmetic and As The Worm Turns to name a few. Had I made it to all the UK shows I’d have been treated to the likes of Pristina, Midnight Cowboy, Jizzlobber and RV as well. I may be wrong but I have a feeling they’re more inclined to be more adventurous with the set if they know they’ve been in the same place recently. So people watching all the YouTube shows may be getting sick of Gentle Art, Evidence et al but I’m sure a lot of those who won’t have ever seen the band live for the first time until this year would be grateful to get the chance to.
If they don’t have enthusiasm for a song then I think I’d probably rather not see it at all, as with when they limply trotted out A Small Victory in Buenos Aires back in ’09 or either of the times they threw out Falling To Pieces (there was a second outing for it last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6arpy1Q7NJk ), though their attitudes have been known to change. Back in the day they were also quite vocal about not liking From Out of Nowhere but that’s unexpectedly proved to be one of their live staples. And I don’t think Everything’s Ruined got much of a look in during the KFAD or AOTY tours yet that one appears to be good and back, gratefully.
We’ll see come June whether that theory pans out any further I suppose. Fingers crossed!
The two opening bands were below the bar.. La plebe was disappointing, frightwig had an interesting story from early years, so at least a bit more interesting.
Yeah, Mike’s voice here is a little rough. Either sick or vocal cord strain.
I’d the one song I hear about over and over that I don’t get the love for is Zombie Eaters. Obviously it’s FNM, so it’s good, but it’s kind of long and repetitive. I like the old ‘rhythm exercise’ on the early bootlegs which was the skeleton of the song better than the actual song. Roddy’s keys on those early demos sounds cooler than the final song.
It’s pretty obvious they’re playing a more conservative list of songs simply because they haven’t toured the US in nearly 20 years. They may be notoriously awkward bastards, but even they want to please people who’ve never seen them before. There’s also a new album to sell!
Rightly of wrongly, a lot of people will want to hear, say, Epic live… at least there are 3 or 4 new songs every night as well.
I would say that this setlist is a pretty good setlist, only being critical that it doesn’t change much night to night. Hopefully it will considering they are playing SF and LA multiple times. But I like that Everything’s Ruined, Cuckoo, and Spirit are showing up often and that Mark Bowen and Pristina have been played. People are tough on Epic. Off of TRT the songs that have aged the best IMO are FOON, Epic, TRT, and The Morning After. They’ve played all of those a ton of times on the reunion except haven’t played The Morning After since TRT tour. TRT may have sold a lot, but to me it is far and away their most uninteresting album, I think mostly b/c of the guitars…they are very cliché metal. Patton’s voice dates the record but sounds fine when he sings the songs now, so I think the guitars are mostly the problem.
I would like to 2nd Jacob for all the songs he wants to hear, except The World Is Yours…that song to me was a not so great B side. Hippie Jam Song, I Won’t Forget You, Perfect Crime, Absolute Zero would be cooler for me. I completely agree about Faster Disco and Kindergarten…those are probably the 2 FNM songs that I listen to the most. But more than anything in Detroit I would love to hear the new songs…all of them!! I hope they start playing Black Friday and Rise of the Fall by then!
Kindergarten, Smaller and Smaller, Why Do You Bother, Faster Disco, Ugly In The Morning, Last To Know, Paths of Glory, THE WORLD IS YOUR. To name a few.
zombie eaters and from out of nowhere and the real thing should be played every show. no idea why they dont play jizzlobber at all…kindergarten should be brought back….easy and evidence have been played EVERY SINGLE SHOW since mid 90s…bury them both and replace them with other slow songs (RV, edge of the world)…..if you drop KFAD from the set, you can replace it with 3 or 4 songs since its a 12 minute song….
BenM.
I would love for them to throw in Small Victory, Last to Know, zombie Eaters, The Real Thing, jizzlobber , and countless others.
I would describe the set list as “conservative”. It wasn’t bad, but it was all stuff we’ve been hearing them do since 2009, save the new tracks. They are good renditions, they’re evolving, and I still belted ’em all out and enjoyed them. Matador was a highlight for sure – it still gives me the same chills I got when the bootleg surfaced in 2011, and it was great to hear it live at last.
I was surprised not to hear Be Aggressive.
Roddy was having a great time and it showed. I was happy to have him take the lead in working the crowd as opposed to MP’s typical maybe-I-actually-hate-you-all schtick. For that matter, MP DID seem to be in a good mood; he didn’t yell at Roddy or throw shit at Puff, so maybe that’s a good sign.
I broadly concur that MP sounded a little challenged at times. He’s still the best in the business, but I am concerned he might actually be a bit tired in the voice right now. I’ll give him a pass – he’s 47 fracking years old! – but it was a little surprising given the man’s voice has seemed to only get better with age.
Big props to tbranado for snaking his way into the photog pit – great shots, my good man!
With regard to Falling To Pieces, BenM, it is my understanding from some interviews and fan input that the band really doesn’t like this song, and only played it once, halfway, out of love for a crowd in Mexico a few years ago.
Huge shout out to La Plebe – they burned it down, and I think I’m going to go catch them at BotH on 5/1. Great energy, great sound.
Unabashedly unrealistic fanboy songs I would love to hear over the next five shows:
Everything’s Ruined (I did get to hear this at Palladium in 2010, and it was gleeful in the extreme)
Kindergarten (This song is seriously feelsy for me, dunno if I’m in a minority on that one)
Crack Hitler (I know Billy mentioned this was in contention a few years ago in a CoS interview)
A Small Victory (still haven’t heard ’em do it since the AD tour, I know they did it once or twice in Europe a few years ago)
Absolute Zero (unlikely I know, they’ve played it ONCE near as I can tell, at the last “reunion” show)
The Real Thing
Midnight Cowboy (when they opened with this in 2010 a few times it was just fantastic, a wonderful dramatic entrance)
What A Day
Underwater Love
As The Worm Turns (probably the most likely on this list)
Mark Bowen (also not out of the question, and I LOVE what they did with this song for the reunion)
Balcony tickets for tonight are going for $40 on Stubhub; GA $80 and up.
I’ll be there tonight, as well as the three Wiltern shows and the Observatory, if anyone wants to fanboy/be cranky/laugh out in line. I’ll probably be wearing the Palladium “I Trident FNM” shirt and my Gate and Perimeter jacket (black, skull on the back) tonight. Also note that it IS 4/20 in San Francisco, so you out of towners, be prepared, it’s a real holiday around these parts 🙂
Actually I’d be quite curious to see what songs people would like to hear thrown in the setlist rotation. When you veer away from the tried and tested live hits I’d imagine people’s preferences would be quite spread out.
With much smugness I’ll admit I’ve been spoiled by the amount of deep tracks I’ve heard them play in the 4 reunion shows I managed to catch in person, it does seem like every once in a while they’ll pull out a treat for the fans. I’ve not yet heard Falling To Pieces and don’t even rank it especially highly amongst their work but I confess it’d be fun to hear it live for sheer nostalgia, but I’m aware that, given they’ve placed it twice (?) since 1993 it’s not that likely. But then again I never thought I’d ever hear them play Everything’s Ruined and it found its way back into rotation a couple years into the reunion.
The other thing to bear in mind is that every tour they’ve done have had sets focused on certain material that didn’t necessarily mix things up tremendously. But because we’re able to watch all their shows on YouTube or keep vigilant tabs on what they’re playing every night in a way that wasn’t nearly as easy back in the 90s I think they’re being criticised for it a lot more. People had these same issues on here back in 2011/2012.
All that being said…I kind of agree that, aside from the new material, maybe a little more work in mixing up the ‘classic era’ FNM tracks would be warranted at this point. I’m surprised they’re not getting bored TBH.
As for Patton sounding a bit off, from what I’ve seen of the last couple nights I’d guess it’s a cold or throat infection of some kind. He has off nights which is inevitable but this sounds a little more extreme than usual. Given how on-form he was back in Feb I’m sure it’s only temporary. Good on him for giving it his all regardless
I tried not to ever complain because 6 yrs ago Id be happy if they came out and played Epic 19 times. But I guess now they are a completely active band soo…
Wtf? The sets are certainly not great. For a band so out if the box, they tour with the same old set. AOTY gets no love besides Ashes and Sorrow. 1 song from TRT? And it’s gonna be Epic of course. No sense in naming all the tracks that are worth playing but never see the light of day. We all know what they are.
Rant over.
basically they wait until the new album to start churning out boring greatest hits sets? How do you get away with 1 Real Thing era song when its their most popular/best selling album? And can we bury Gentle Art, Evidence and KFAD PLEASE
Maybe that’s why it doesn’t get played that often.
Hate to say it, but Patton’s voice is sounding a bit croaky on Matador there.
Pretty standard set. Happy to see Matador in there. Curious to see how much they change it up tonight. I’m going to both NY shows and I’m hoping for big changes between the 2 nights. When I saw them in brooklyn they changed it up nicely between night 1 & 2.
