As we reported yesterday, German radio station RBB had a Faith No More Sol Invictus preview show as part of their popular RadioAffair show last night. And theyx played FOUR songs from the album Sol Invictus!
You can listen to the whole show again now here.
The show included the premiere of full recorded album version of Cone of Shame – and it sounds bloody marvellous – and Matador.
The show also includes plays of Motherfucker and Superhero as well as We Care a Lot! and Midlife Crisis and a snippet of Digging the Grave. Truly brilliant radio.
It sounds like it’s playing from a radio- which could be caused by a few different things: 1. this was recorded from a an AM/FM receiver. 2. The broadcaster adjusted the levels for radio 3. The stream source is compressed. 4. How dare this woman talk over the fucking crescendo of Matador?! We were just about to peel the onion. We were right there! MAN!

I agree, turning up Bill’s bass in Matador is an excellent choice. And Patton’s vocals are much clearer. Motherfucker sounds the same as the version downloaded with purchase of the vinyl, different than the single. Cone of Shame sounds cleaner but much the same, which is good. All the drums sound better. Matador just sounds so great. Love how Jon’s guitar kind of swoops in several times. I wish those bastards hadn’t cut off the ending!
Haven’t ventured as far as Matador in the show yet… there seems to have a decent selection of songs generally but still a shame you can’t jump ahead in the stream… ah well – album out on a couple of weeks, so no biggie.
Yeah, Roddy’s droning voice is markedly more sinister in effect, and towards the end the guitars have apparently been bumped in volume, giving the mix a heavier edge. Hearing Gould’s bass more significantly in Matador sounds great too. I agree on the swampy, attacking part of Patton’s voice on Cone of Shame (as you referenced the heavy section). Blends in better with the volume tweak; no longer sticks out to me and overpowers the mix. Now we can just sit back and enjoy the thunderous arrangement blowing our ear drums without distraction. (:
I wasn’t entirely convinced that the final version of the album would sound so completely different… but Jesus, it really does! Motherfucker sounds massive here; bass more pronounced, the mix is better overall – awesome stuff. Patton’s vocals seem lower in the mix on Cone of Shame’s heavy part too, which works well. That weirdly dry, slightly claustrophobic sound on the leaked tracks appears to have gone too. Bearing in mind the songs they play here have all been compressed for streaming so the real release is going to sound even better.
Now I’m happy!
Without pointing out the obvious changes, overall the recordings sound “cleaned up” and brighter in places (speaking to Cone of Shame & Matador). Very satisfied with the production from my what I can hear over an internet stream.
Am I delirious or does the Motherfucker mix sound quite different??? (the audio player seems to have no controls, so I can’t easily listen again) Because it seemed as though Roddy’s voice sounded more pronounced, and there also appeared to be a bigger, louder buildup to the solo? I guess I could give it another listen and compare. All I know is I found myself enjoying it even more than usual. Hmm.
Songs appear in this order: Cone of Shame, Motherfucker, Matador, and finally Superhero. Prepare for a very long wait between Matador and Superhero.
