The July edition of Classic Rock features an in-depth article with interviews with Mike Patton, Bill Gould and Roddy Bottum.
It’s a great feature and stars an angry Patton, Roddy’s London windfall and Tom Jones in Reno and photos from the legendary Ross Halfin and words from well-known film and music journalist Nick Hasted.
Here’s Roddy on the new album:
“It is different than before. It sounds really stripped-down and simple. Mike’s singing from a more solitary voice this time around. It doesn’t feel as schziophrenic as it was on past records. It’s a lot darker than I thought we would have gone, very sombre. When were super-young, we felt like we were always going to be this dark, hypnotic, Goth sort of band, and the tone’s come back round to that.”
Mike also spoke about his reaction to hearing the music some of the band had been working on, saying that he was “honoured and humbled at the fact that the band had been working on this stuff, and they were thinking of me being a part of it. I was very moved by it. More importantly, the music was incredibly strong and pointed. Maybe in ways that our records haven’t been in the past.”
@weirdlittleboy – They’re coming out with a documentary on Moondog, “The Viking of 6th Ave.” I’m hoping it will do for him what Sugar Man did for Sixto Rodriguez and reissues will be made. So if you’re thinking of collecting anything by Moondog you might want to hold off for awhile… I’ve seen one of his albums go for $400 on amazon.ca. Congrats on finishing your FNM collection 😉
@the pan: I love New Amsterdam by Moondog!
@the pan: I like siouxee. I discovered them when I heard that FNM was influenced by them .There is that certain vibe that reminds me of the early FNM. I like intense music and it doesn’t matter if it’s pop or something else. At the Moment I listen to a lot of hip hop stuff like Sisyphus, Dälek or Run the jewels.
From your list I like Moondog most. They’re incredible. I’ve never heard about them before.
My favourite Canadian Band by the way is godspeed you black emperor. And: finally I got my Ricochet and my Midlife crisis single. So I’m complete. I am a collector 🙂
@weirldlittleboy – Thanks for the link! Listened to it in one sitting. Very cool album. Funny about Tarantula and Banhart collaborating, what a coincidence I like them both. What do you think of Siouxsie & the Banshees? Just looked into them again since FNM cited them as one of their inspirations for SI. I must have only listened to tracks from their debut album the first time around because everything else they’ve done I’m loving. They strike me as being similar in intention as FNM, in the sense that they make experimental music accessible with strong hooks. I’m guessing they’re prob too pop for you though.
@ the pan: music from Canada:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6KZua0-ovaI
Greetings.
@the pan: yes, Tarantula is great. I saw them live in munich many years ago. There were only ten to twelve people in the audience but the band really gave everything. Tarantula is now known AS Priestbird. It’s funny but the two Bands you’ve picked out of my list have had a collaboration called Megapuss.Banhart and the singer of Tarantula.I will give you a feedback of the list you sent me when I habe listened to everything.Greetings, Christian.
@weirdlittleboy – 600-700 albums? You must never get rid of any ever. That also means you must have some embarrassing ones 😉 Anyway, thanks for the list. I especially enjoyed Tarantula AD and Devendra Banhart. I’m pretty excited about those.
@ the pan: okay, it’ s obvious that you have a wide range of musical taste.I am collecting music for many years now. I think in the meantimee it must be between 600 and 700 physical items. I really appreciate your list and it will take some time for me to try out all the Bands I haven’t heard of yet. So this is my list of Albums that I like most: (artist/album)
Tarantula AD/ Book of Sand. Isis/Oceanic.These New puritans/hidden.Nick Cave/the boatman’s call.Sufjan Stevens/the age of adz.Nine Inch Nails/the downward spiral.Priestbird/In your time.Godspeed You Black Emperor/Yanqui UXO.Neurosis/Through Silver In Blood.Air/10000 Hz legend.Panthers/Things are strange.Battles/Mirrored.Fishbone/give a monkey a brain. Weissglut/etwas kommt in deine Welt.Oxbow/the narcotic story.Lovage/music to make love to your old lady by.Dillinger escape plan/ire works.fantomas/directors cut. Mr.Bungle/Disco Volante.Live/throwing Cooper.Danzig/4.Philip Glas/glassworks.Tool/Aenima.Tom Waits/Alice.Eels/souljacker.World leader pretend/punches.Devendra Banhart/Smokey rolls down thunder mountain.
… I forgot Dennis Wilson. He only came out with one album, but every one needs to know he exists.
@weirdlittelboy – Funny you ask that… I was wondering the same thing. Every one should answer that question with a big obnoxious post like this one, cause I’m always looking for knew music.
Thing is, I find most artists are terribly inconsistent quality wise, or just plain sell out, so my staples are few. Other than the aforementioned Mr. Bungle, anything by these artists: Patrick Watson, Peeping Tom, Simon and Garfunkel, Otis Redding, Muse (apprehensive about Drones though :/), HINDS, Vashti Bunyan, CCR, Natalie Walker, Sixto Rodriguez, Moondog, Jeff Buckley, Mariee Sioux, Tomahawk, Koop, Rodrigo Amarante and Sun Ra. I like the first three albums from VAST, 30 Seconds to Mars and Matchbox Twenty. MJ has a few good albums too. That said, I enjoy music from every decade, and almost every genre. I COULD list a bunch of stuff you’ve probably already heard of – like the classics every one likes, so instead, here’s some obscure (more or less) songs I like:
War by Louis and the love, All eyes by Post War Years, Red fraction by Mel, Handlebars by Flobots, Proto by Dios Mio, Honey by Torres, Baby I’m yours by Breakbot, Full circle by Half Moon Run, Do you remember by Jarryd James, Change by Nimmo and the Gauntletts, Illuminated by Hurts, Money by Kitten The Band, Come dancing by The Kinks, Hurricane by Ms Mr, Off to the races by Lana Del Rey, So cold by Ben Cocks, Illusion by VNV Nation, DLZ by TV On The Radio, Why I wait by Kitten The Band, Pleasant Street by Tim Buckley, Drinking in L.A. by Bran Van 3000, Bang bang by Nancy Sinatra, Head over heels by Digital Daggers, U.R.A. fever by The Kills, Mad about the boy by Dinah Washington, Break my heart by Sara Jackson, Long time coming home by Dr. Music, Who would have thought by Darren Hayes, Two shots of happy one shot of sad by Matt Dusk, Wildest moments by Jessie Ware, Coconut by Harry Nilsson, The lightning strike by Snow Patrol, This moment by Matt Wertz, Song to the siren by This Mortal Coil, Aqua vitae by Future World Music, The greatest by Cat Power, Strength of Strings by This Mortal Coil, I am you by Kim Taylor, A lighter shade of pale by Procol Harum, Everything is embarrassing by Sky Ferreira, I can’t feel the bottom by Ash Koley, The beginning of anne by Fay Wolf, Soul wars by Awolnation, No ordinary love by Sherrie Lea, Looking for you again by Matthew Perryman Jones, Temptation waits by Garbage, Running by Jessie Ware, Break of dawn by Goapele, City by Hollywood Undead, This love by Craig Armstrong, Maybe Tomorrow by Stereophonics, Ships in The Night by Mat Kearney, To be free by Emiliana Torrini, Anything by Shawn Clement & Cari Howe, Apple of my eye by Ash Koley, Stay gold by First Aid Kit, Begin again by Measure, In the city by Kevin Rudolf, You are mine by Mute Math, Slow motion by David Gray, Strange and beautiful by Aqualung, Hearts a mess (3 am mix by joe hardy) by Goyte, Shattered by Trading Yesterday, American Trash by Innerpartysystem, Breathe me by Sia, Attracting flies by Aluna George, Manhattan by Gallant, I can’t hear you by The Dead Weather, Bread and butter by Hugo, Broken by Jake Bugg. I’ll stop myself here!
If you want more places to find music, I use NPR and Spin. And Sputnikmusic is my favorite for unprofessional reviews – SI is trending there right now in fact.
@ the pan: where I live there are just two radio stations that play relevant music. FM4 which is an austrian Station and M94.5, published by munich students. But mostly I discover music by reading a certain german magazine, called Visions. I ‘ve never heard any FNM song by our regular radio stations( exept ‘easy’) Which Kind oft music do you listen to besides FNM?
@weirdlittleboy – So jealous. Yeah I guess it would be easier to meet him with one of his smaller bands; less of a crowd to compete with for attention. Lucky for us fans.
One of the few songs I have always loved no matter how overplayed it was on our rock stations, was Epic. Naturally, I thought they were a one hit wonder. But I got curious one day about what else the band had done (no other reason than I always do a lot of digging in search of good music), and the first song I came across was Evidence. Totally floored, I looked into everything else and loved every song that came out of them since TRT.
Radio played a significant part in my delay to investigate FNM’s catalog, due to their bad habit of airing a small collection of a bands very biggest hits and ignoring their other well received singles. Only with FNM this issue seems to have been compounded, as I have only ever heard Epic on the radio. And in my experience, if radios play strictly one song from a band, they are indeed a one hit wonder, so not really worth looking into. Bands which have at least four or five other tracks that receive regular radio play, have a tendency to have a decent sized catalog and thus some merit as artists. So I usually pay those latter musicians more attention and look into their work before I would a band like FNM. Sickening how much power radio stations have over a bands career. But I digress…
Actually, now I got to wondering how often – if at all, other fans hear FNM tracks aired other than Epic. I’m under the impression some how that Midlife Crisis was pretty well received by the masses, yet I don’t recall hearing it when it was first released. If it ever did get radio play at the time, it certainly doesn’t receive it now like Epic does.
@the pan: in 2000 Mr.Bungle played a show in munich and some weeks before my little daughter was born. After the concert Patton showed up and gave some autographs to the people. I have had my daughters first little shirt with me to get it signed. Some weeks later they did a show in Karlsruhe which is about two hours away from my hometown. After the concert I waited a long time hoping the Band would show up again. I was nearly the only Person left in there when suddenly Patton crossed the arena. And believe me or not: He remembered me as beeing the guy with the baby’s shirt. And so we talked for a while about New Albums from bungle and fantomas and he said that FNM would never return 😉 AS I said he was very friendly to me. And he told me not to drink and drive when I said that I had to drive more than 200 km’s to get home. 😉 He still wore the police uniform he had on during the show. In my youth Patton really was an Idol to me, so that little chat with him will always be a nice memory. May I ask you how you discovered FNM?
@weirdlittleboy – 0.0 What did he say? Damn, wish these guys came to my province. When they come to Canada usually they go to Ontario, Quebec or BC and I can’t afford to get out to them. How did you manage to get a chance to talk to him? Love reading about fan encounters.
You should upload your stuff to youtube, you’d be doing a great service 😉
@ the pan: Back in 2000 I met a guy from Ireland at a Mr.Bungle show in munich. Since then we did a lot oft tape trading- live cd’s and Video tapes. So I got many FNM TV appearances on video tape and most of my live bootlegs. This is a semi offical Interview release I got once:
http://www.pattonmad.com/Faith%20No%20More/Pages/InterviewCDChatback.html
I am trying to get all the regular Singles and maybe some of the special Album versions. I’m still looking for the ricochet and the stripsearch single. Hoping for More SI stuff to come. Have I already told that I met Mike Patton twice and talked to him back in the 90ies?He was very kind!
@weirdlittleboy – You’re too kind. But yes, I do need the physical official CD’s. And thanks XD
Those live appearances you speak of, are they up on youtube? What I’d really love is more interviews. There must be more out there for a band that was fairly prominent in the 90’s. I’m hoping with the SI release that old fans will start drudging up material they have laying around and uploading it.
@BenM – Yeah, I think I’ve narrowed it down finally. Those links made quick work of it. I was not aware of the B-Sides and Alternate Versions disc, and I was not aware that The Joke’s Over was not official, so I’ll stop dreaming. Thanks for clarifying that!
Also Benrun: the Superhero edit is from the Superhero promo CD sent out by Reclamation to radio stations, as far as I know the only CD version of a Superhero release. Has a very home-made feel. It’s the version of Superhero that debuted on Radio 1, with the long outtro cut down significantly.
Pan, it seems like you’ve more or less worked it out. The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection will def cover most ground. For the other AD and TRT tracks if you don’t want to get the reissues then you might want Live at the Brixton Academy (for Grade/Cowboy) and the first Epic single for Chinese Arithmetic. Worm Turns with Patton from the Australian Midlife Crisis single or two versions of the Japanese Angel Dust (not the one in that eBay link). Spanish Eyes is KFAD era, from either the Ricochet or Evidence singles, Joke from Digging the Grave (later Who Cares A Lot, the first best of). Remember there are multiple versions of each single so best to consult the discography to make sure you track down the right one. Most of all don’t bother trying to track down The Joke’s Over as it isn’t an official release. The only official limited b-sides release is the one mentioned earlier, B-Sides and Alternate Versions and it’s fairly sparse. As far as the most cost-effective variation you’ll have to compare what various releases are going for but it shouldn’t be that complicated with the tracks you’ve specified. Good luck!

@the pan: I could get all the Songs and More copied for you ( for free, of course) but I think thats not what you are looking for. I also habe a lot oft FNM live apearances from the 90ies.
@weirdlittleboy & BenM – I can’t believe how much you have collected weirdlittelboy! Bootlegs even! I on the other hand, don’t want any particular collectible disc and I don’t need any remixes, just some of the b-sides. I’m not a collector by any means, but I like owning physical copies of what I listen to. So the fewest album purchases for these songs: I Started a Joke, Spanish Eyes, Absolute Zero, The Big Kahuna, The Cowboy Song, Light Up and Go, The Grade, Sweet Emotion, I Won’t Forget You, The World Is Yours, As The Worm Turns (Patton studio version), and Chinese Arithmetic (Patton – live, as there’s no studio cut). So twelve tracks. And yeah, luckily my AD release has Easy already. The discography you linked Ben, is very helpful! Although I couldn’t find The Joke’s Over listed (official limited b-sides album). Weird. That one has all of those songs minus I Won’t Forget You, The World Is Yours and Chinese Arithmetic. The Rhino reissue is missing seven tracks I’d like, but it is more attainable than The Joke’s Over, of course. But if I bought that reissue along with The Very Best of Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection (lol) I would actually have all twelve songs I want, with little over lap (only two songs). Both CD purchases would total almost $60 coming from Canada though. $60 for twelve tracks… I don’t know about you guys but all the music I like has a tendency to be ultra rare, and thus ultra expensive :/
We really need a proper and more comprehensive compilation. FNM have way too many strong b-sides that keep getting left out of reissues or Best Of’s. But I only discovered FNM & Mr. Bungle etc. three months ago so their official/standard releases are already a lot of material for me to wade through. So I guess I can afford to wait for a better b-sides compilation… cause I’m stingy like that.
I remember checking out various sites to find rare FNM releases that didn’t get released here in oz a few years back. Don’t remember the site but, I was surprised and shocked to find that FNM has a few rare promo singles out there released in different territories.
KFAD – 5 track single album promo
Edge of the World – Brazil only single
Woodpecker From Mars – France only two track promo
Land of Sunshine – 5 track AD promo single
And most interestingly ( and rare) What A Day 1 track promo single U.S only release!!
Chinese Arithmetic – promo single.
BenM, nice list. I didn’t know a Superhero radio edit existed…how’d you score that?
Pan
Not 100% sure I’m getting what your goal is, but is it essentially that you want a physical copy of all the FNM rarities in some form or other? And if so is this just studio-recorded b-sides or also remixes and live tracks as well?
The thing is there have been so many that it would take a long time and a lot of spare change amassing the kind of collection that will yield everything you want. This is speaking as someone who took a long time and a lot of spare change amassing that kind of collection itself. Glorious as it is, and as fun a hobby as it was, it took a lot of legwork.
It really does seem like the best option for grouping together a large assortment of the rarities will in fact be the two Rhino re-releases, as much of a cynical cash-grab as it is. Of course this doesn’t help when it comes to KFAD, AOTY or Chuck-era b-sides, though as best I can tell the upcoming TRT reissue will be the first non-vinyl release of the From Out of Nowhere extended mix.
There are also so many variations on each LP release that it’s hard to come up with a definitive version of each. WLB’s mentioned the Australian 2CD ‘Angel Dust’ set (this also has the bonus track Easy, which I think most don’t consider a bonus track as probably more versions sold with it than without, certainly here in the UK; the bonus disc has identical content to what was released in Europe as the live EP ‘I’m Easy (Live)/’Be Aggressive’ (Live), which was a companion to the Easy/Be Aggressive single that was massive at the time) but France, the US and Japan have different ‘special editions’ as well. The release in that eBay listing is a fairly straightforward 1992 original issue, again it has Easy as a ‘bonus’ track but other than that it’s nothing special.
There are special editions of AOTY that have most of the remixes and both b-sides, one 2-disc set of KFAD has a bonus disc titled ‘B-Sides and Alternate Versions’ but it’s only a handful, alternate special editions have bonus tracks like Absolute Zero or the Spanish version of Evidence, depending on territory. The only version of KFAD that groups all the b-sides is the 7-disc vinyl set though it leaves out Absolute Zero (presumably as that’s the b-side of the vinyl Digging the Grave single). It also has a pretty limp sound compared to the various 12″ KFAD releases I’ve picked up.
This may be of some help as a reference, it’s almost all the FNM tracks I’ve amassed (I know it’s missing a couple of vinyl-only Chuck-era remixes that I’ve yet to make digital rips of) http://benmitchell.x10.mx/FNMplaylist.jpg
This doesn’t represent all the releases that are out there by a long shot as most of the tracks have been put out over multiple releases, either myself or iTunes automatically picked a release to assign them to. But it may help you on your way. If you’re really up for some lengthy research I’d recommend having a good scour of http://www.faithnomorediscography.com/, which will be especially helpful in determining what versions of what CD you’re getting off sites like eBay.
Hope this was of some use and not just babble.
@ the pan: may I ask you, which songs / discs you are exactly looking for? I think, I already have all the songs, they’ve ever recorded. I would be looking for a cheap Ricochet single, just to collect it. Of course I first had all their regular studio Albums, then I wanted to have each Album as a special Version and then I had to have all their singles, which I haven’ t just finished yet. My Angel Dust special for example is the Australien 2Cd Version as I already told you. In the meantime I have collected vinyls and bootlegs, too. I wished that there will be more SI stuff to be released.Hopefully you are able to understand my poor English. 🙂
@weirdlittleboy Yes, I have looked at all the options so many times, debating. I was wondering what others were doing exactly to obtain all the songs – and it does look like a lot of purchase over lap is inevitable for most fans to get them all. Good to know I haven’t missed anything. I think I’ve decided that spending twenty bucks on compilations and reissues for three or four tracks I want, and having to do that multiple times to collect them all is some thing I’m not willing to do right now. I’m gonna hold out for awhile to see what else they release. And considering how they’ve released a lot of compilations recently, I don’t think I’ll have to wait long XD
@ the pan: I am collecting FNM records for many years now and I know that some oft them are hard to get or are very expensive. I got the 2CD Angel Dust set. The 2nd disc contains four live songs from munich. The KFAD 2CD set I got contains das Schützenfest, absolute zero etc. My AOTY copy has some remixes on it. The only song that I haven’t had yet was the big Kahuna. So I just bought ‘ Midlife Crisis- the very best of’ 🙂
@weirdlittleboy – Hmm. After having done some more hunting around, I’m realizing I might be better off sticking with the standard albums I already purchased and buy The Very Best Of Compilation or wait for another b-sides release. Brand new Imports are astonishingly rare, and I think it would be a miracle if I could find all three of them – for a reasonable price yet. Not to mention that using an Amazon site not representing my country is very hit or miss because sellers are mostly listed if they are willing to ship to my country. So if that German seller would ship to me, generally speaking, he should be listed on amazon.ca as well. Signing up on various sites to see if they will ship their items to me would be a lot of trial and error, me thinks. Damn this b-side issue is so constipating. Maybe since FNM is back the chances of a b-sides compilation isn’t so outlandish. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!
@ the pan. Thanks for your comment. I found this on amazon.de:

Japan Import, Angel Dust + Bonus and Label: Mis (?)
I might as well post this question here. I recently tried purchasing a bunch of FNM Import CD’s from this seller:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/FAITH-NO-MORE-ANGEL-DUST-JAPAN-CD-D50/271876228997?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140620075055%26meid%3Df53899c8dde24dddb25f23d85952b961%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D371317629242
Any one have a hot clue what the difference is between a Japan CD verses a Japan Import CD? Cause these sellers seem to be differentiating, and that’s new to me. The CD’s they are selling have no bonus tracks. The page listed the CD’s as “rare,” and as “Japan CD,” so I presumed they must be Imports and that they just cut and paste the standard track listing as many sellers of Import CD’s often do. I would have emailed them to confirm the notion, if only they accepted questions. So I decided to take a risk and buy them. The CD’s I got though, with their track listing does not strike me as rare.

Here you can read about everyone bitching about the releases: http://newfaithnomore.com/2015/04/23/rhino/

Bob: I was seventeen when Angel Dust came out. So I know how you feel these days.
We’ve already had all the bonuses before, and obvs its a cash in, but its a nice package tbh. I may get TRT vinyl, not sure if theres ltd edition colours…
Loving all this FNM news, can’t believe 3rd in UK charts. I was too young when AOTY was released to know anything about FNM so this is the first time I’ve properly lived through a release by the band I guess, it’s amazing.
What do you guys think about the forth coming deluxe reissues oft TRT and AD? I already pre ordered both oft them. The Band says that these special editions do not come from FNM. But anyway I’m looking forward to, though I already have all the extra songs. Greetings…
