Faith No More made their debut performance at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York last night (ok, the Theater after a late switch) and delivered another hugely impressive set.
The band played no fewer than six songs from Angel Dust – with RV and A Small Victory again getting relatively rare airings – with five from new album Sol Invictus.
One New York resident was very impressed:
New York Fucking City!! HEROIC! best city in the world. thanks for being there , everybody! really good time. good to be home! hug!!!!

These are again by the brilliant Tara McPherson and here they are:
And here is Tara’s own post
Yeah guys fair point, I’ve done Philly and Merriweather in the last few months and paid under 50 for tickets both times, even GA.
However I forgot to factor in that NYC bump in ticket prices with my last answer so I understand you wanting better bang for your buck. Coming from where I grew up (Australia) tickets are way, way more expensive by comparison. In fact back in the 90’s when US bands were touring you also had to factor in the exchange rate, it was pretty normal to pay 100+ bucks for a show even then, and we did get upset over gigs that fell on the short side – things you forget when you get old eh?
Eric – yeah – tix were more than that. I was near the back and my tix were $65 each, which is kinda my point. Bands have jacked up their prices these days, because albums no longer make much money – and I’m fine with that, it’s a tradeoff. But I also expect 2 hrs. I’ve always felt that way – since I was a kid. If that’s what they need to do to stay fresh and keep playing – then ok – that’s what they need to do. But then charge less.
Anyway – I don’t want it to sound like too much complaining. But that’s my only beef with an otherwise amazing set and band.
Eric… I hear ya! But to be fair my GA tickets were $80 for FNM. And also U2 and PJ both take the stage around 8:10-8:30 so I’m still able to make it home by midnight. All in all though, I still loved the FNM show. Especially with out the usual covers ,except Easy, I got 90 min of pure FNM. 6 AD cuts which blew my mind. Current sets are really great. New material is catching on quick with the fans and sounds enormous live.
@nickc As a dad who likes to be in bed on the earlier side, love me a good 90 minute gig. The Merriweather show was brilliant because I was home well before midnight. I’ll actually skip bands that play 3 hour shows for that reason – too long. I think the FNM tix were 40 something bucks, I think 90 minutes is pretty good value. If I was paying 60-70+, I think I’d probably expect a bit more.
Love the comments here….I’m replaying the show in my head and am looking at the pics from the show. Great time to be a FNM fan.
Aw…I also agree, fair comment, but I’m with Nickc. I imagine they are doing what they can while keeping the quality high and I’m glad they are out there doing it.
I’ll admit…it took me a few minutes to figure out what PJ stood for, I was thinking PJ Harvey but I’m guessing you mean Pearl Jam.
AW…. I’m with you. I’m a big PJ fan they regularly play for 3 hours +, saw U2 play 2.5 hours at MSG. But I’ve grown to accept the shorter sets. It went from 20-21 down to 17-18. The way I look at it, whatever keeps them going longer works for me.
These guys are incredible, seen them three time since the reformation. They rock, the energy from Patton amps the whole room. But…. the set was too short. If Pearl Jam, the Stones, Springsteen, Cornell and others of that generation can go for close to three hours, how come they can’t, they have the back catalog and this is NYC….
Everything’s Ruined was a highlight
aw, that’s a fair comment. After they played Just a Man to close it last night, my sister said, “No, I don’t want it to end!” You’re right. I wish they played a second encore. But I understand how hard it is to tour and perform, so I give the fellas a pass.
I am glad they played the Theater at MSG. It was a really good venue for them. Amazing to see all these FNM fans packed into the place and hear people talking about the songs and wearing the gear. I couldn’t believe I was in Penn Station seeing people wearing FNM shirts, a lot of people. So great! It is really impressive to see artists like this perform with such passion.
Let me just say, I’m the biggest FNM fan in the world — tied with all of you — and I saw them in Philly last week, and MSG last night. They completely kick ass – the setlist was awesome, and I have no complaints there. But I’m surprised that no one else has mentioned the short sets. Philly was about 80 minutes. MSG was maybe closer to 90. There’s no way a top headliner band should be playing less than 2 hours, in my opinion. I absolutely love these guys – please don’t kill me for saying this – I just think that’s standard and I’m surprised no one else has mentioned it. They easily have 10 more GREAT songs — not good, but GREAT songs — that they could play. Another 5-6 would be sufficient. Land of Sunshine and Surprise Your Dead – I know those make it into some shows. Jizzlobber, Crack Hitler, What A Day, Zombie Eaters, Woodpecker From Mars. Hell, I’d listen to them fart the national anthem – but those songs are all unreal. …. Anyway, I have zero complaints with anything the band actually did — and admittedly, I could listen to them for 5 hrs — but I don’t think 2 is a lot to ask for. Cheers.
They were really great last night! Gotta agree that Black Friday blew me away: I didn’t expect it to sound that big and roomy live. It was a lot of fun to see this mini-Angel Dust set. RV? Are you kidding me?
The band is so sharp right now and what Patton is doing makes me want to get back in shape again… and I hate exercise!
Been seeing the band live since the Angel Dust tour but this last run has been one of the best…I was at the July 5th Brooklyn reunion..they did a twenty song set list. The May 14th Webster Hall show was a moshing pit party and really intimate but last night was a classic. I agree that Black Friday was just perfect. Madator is already a classic to me and hearing old favorites (a small victory and RV) live again was priceless. Last time I heard those songs live was in 92 at Roseland Ballroom. The intensity on Superhero was on another level last night in NYC. Enjoy it….might not see FNM in this area for some time.
Black Friday sounded awesome live. Much better than on the album. I also noticed the new material received a much better response than in May. I guess more time to listen paid off.
impressive setlist, envy
And I noticed Dan Boyle (NY Ranger) watching from behind the stage jamming out.
Great show last night. Setlist was awesome, crowd was a bit tame. Band was really tight with Patton in much better form than Webster Hall. My only complaint is I’m done with Evidence at every show. Could easily be switched out with Sunny Side, Edge of the World, Etc…. Hard to complain when you get Small Victory , Everything’s Ruined and RV in the same set! But, switch Be Aggresive with Land of Sunshine and Motherfucker with Cone and it’s nearly perfect. I know Just a Man was played a lot in the past but I’m glad it’s back. Much better closer than the usual covers.
