Mike Patton is obviously hitting the publicity treadmill for the 4 May release of Mondo Cane (May the 4th be with you Mike) and has given another interview, this time to the Noisecreep blog.
Here’s the FNM-related extracts:
“After Faith No More broke up, the band became bigger than it ever was and the mythos of the band took on a life of its own. My question is simple. Why now? And how do you feel doing it?
Well, ‘Why now?’ is a strange question that I can’t answer with any sort of intelligence. I have no idea. There is some sort of thing in our culture that fetishizes things from the past, and we have gotten more attention now that we’ve reunited than we ever had before. That is automatically weird and tells you about people and our society … what do they want to hear? They want to hear things that make them comfortable and remind them of certain times and places in their life, which is totally OK. Being as old as we are, we’re a part of that. I can tell you this: Musically, we sort of got back together, played together and realized this music still works and is still good and still feels good. Whether or not it is going to translate into today is another question. But we feel confident enough to keep playing it. There you have it. I am not going to lie. There were also offers that were ridiculous.
Probably something you couldn’t turn down?
You can always turn it down if it doesn’t feel good. That is easy, but the point being there was interest and we still felt proud of the music, and we kinda cooked up a new batch or took old ingredients and threw them in a new pot, so it felt right and it was easy …”
No mention again of new FNM music but then again he wasn’t asked. Given that FNM are more or less planning to still be touring in December, will they keep mixing up the old ingredients in new ways or can we expect some new elements and constituents tossed into the recipe?
I don´t think they´d be coming with new material. No chance of topping the old stuff. Let it be.
They had so little airplay in the US that a lot of their material is brand new to me. No nostalgia here.
Commert #10 from shakey said it all….
Well, well, well…
“Album of the year” in my opinion is just like the other albuns: Excelent!!!!
I mean, if they decide to come with a new record and if it sounds like the “Album of the year” for example, I will love it!!! no doubt!
For now, I just hope they keep the “Second coming tour” until the end of this year and more hope yet for a new album in 2011!!!
Reading these Patton´s interviews I could realize how confortable he is with this FNM reunion and that makes me so happy and confident about new stuff!
One more thing: FNM NEVER sounds “nostalgia” for me because I have listened to them with nonstop during the last 2 decades!
“You´re perfect, yes it´s true!!!
Shakey I agree. In 90’s I knew about them but thery’re just another band I listened. I re-discovered them couple a years ago and fell in love immidiately. It’s just great music.
after all the stuff and projects Mike has experienced after 1998 and still being able to say about FNM “we still felt proud of the music” – now, that is something that makes me really happy and hopefull in regards to FNM and their potential new stuff (some day, not necessarily before 2012 if they still want to be proud of their music, but anyway, there is a chance!)
You’re right Shakey. When someone hears music for the first time and loves it, it’s not nostalgia even if it’s old music. It’s an experience that lasts a lifetime. I heard FNM when Epic first came out when I was a kid, so there is some nostalgia for me, but I remember that it also turned me on to Sabbath because of War Pigs. Hearing those old Sabbath albums for the first time blew my mind. Great music truly is timeless and can rediscovered at any age/time without needing nostalgic love.
“There is some sort of thing in our culture that fetishizes things from the past”
“They want to hear things that make them comfortable and remind them of certain times and places in their life”
These quotes may be true to a certain extent, but for me FNM and other bands from the time never went away. I own all FNM albums and they have been in heavy roration from the day I bought them. In turn, and I am sure this is true elsewhere, my kids who are now 11 and 13 got turned on to it. Also some younger people may have discovered on their own, but it’s so timeless they became as big a fan as anyone.
This is why they are bigger than they ever were.
Another DVD and CD would be awesome. A new original album can’t be forced though. If John, Mike, Roddy and Billy are sitting on some new ideas or riffs that could creatively spark Patton above his Peeping Tom level, I’d want to hear that, but anything less would tarnish FNM.
Well, who knows about a new album. If they do write and record a new album, it has to be as good or better than AD or KFAD, anything close to AOTY (which is a great album, but not excellent) will leave the band and us fans disappointed. I dont think they have the motivation they had when they wanted to prove that they were not a funk metal band for AD or when they were trying to deal with all the problems post AD for KFAD. AOTY was just that, the album of that year (another year, another album) with some excellent songs and some not so good songs (home sick home, got that feeling, paths of glory).
I wish they’d release a live album instead, as a document of the great shows they’ve been playing. I know there’s tons of bootlegs laying around, but I think they need to release an official one, with the best songs they’ve been playing. They have a good chance now with the three Wardfield shows….Let’s hope…
FNM Please don’t do a covers album…That would be a bad idea and a kick in the guts to all fans awaiting new material. I heard they would do this. lets hope not. FNM does seem to like playing/recording cover songs though…
I think we should just worry about them doing a full US tour first.
Well, someone needs to straight out ask him about new material.
“May the 4th be with you”
*kneeslap*
Maybe Faith No More will release a 6 or 7 song EP!!!!
Who knows? None of us know anything lol.
Enjoy it while you can….
