  • The best video  of Mike Patton at the Gainsbourg tribute at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night
  • The LA Times way lyrical on Patton’s performance: “Patton, possessed of a slithery outlaw charm, was the evening’s breakaway lead. As the bass slinked around beatnik conga drums, he half spit and half savagely whispered in French his regards to life lived as a jerk. Occasionally he wriggled his eyebrows or widened his eyes, as if he’d just spotted a cold-blooded femme across the room.”
  • And the review from Spin
  • Great interview with Greg Werckman  of Ipecac from Skinny magazine.

Mike Patton at Serge Gainsbourg tribute

August 29th, 2011|News|7 Comments

Mike Patton performed seven songs at the Serge Gainsbourg tribute at the Hollywood Bowl last night.

Not much has yet surfaced in video and even most of the photos that have seem to have been taken from space.

Here is a distant snippet of Ford Mustang from royalghost on YouTube

And mxdwn have an extensive review. Sample quote: ” One of the strongest moments of the whole night not counting the evening’s epic finale (which we’ll get to in just a moment), found Mike Patton returning, taking Sean Lennon’s place and singing “Ford Mustang” with Muhl. That was stunning low and high octave interplay if there ever was such a thing. Hardcore Patton fans might remember that he covered this by himself on Great Jewish Music: Serge Gainsbourg way back in 1997. ”

Nice Patton pic from the LA Weekly

Stereogum also have some pics

And here is a Twitter pic that was posted by @spinnerpr

While Roddy was also there – and is pictured here with Zola Jesus – via his Twitter

More vids as we get them.

Faith No More top one list and not another

August 4th, 2011|News|11 Comments

PopMatters have chosen Epic as the number 1 in their 10 Best Alternative Metal Singles of the 1990s list.
This is what they had to say:
“Although The Real Thing was issued in 1989, “Epic” narrowly makes this list by virtue of being released in January 1990. Which might be a little unfair to all the other ranking songs, as Faith No More’s crossover pop hit more than lives up to its title. This Frankenstein’s Monster of funk, metal, alt-rock, and hip-hop is far more than the sum of its parts, and it introduced the world to singer Mike Patton, one of rock’s most talented and versatile vocalists. Patton’s rap flow might sound stilted to modern ears, but “Epic” overcomes its dated sonic signifiers by virtue of the effective realization of its ambition. It’s especially noteworthy that while the nu metal generation was effusive in its praise of the San Francisco, California group, few of them attempted anything as audacious as this track.”
Cheers Erik for the tip.

Meanwhile, Faith No More’s Mike Patton features at number 48 in Greatest Rock Stars list in the latest edition of Kerrang magazine. Lots of people i don’t know are higher in the list including the number one Jason Aalon Butler. Full list here.
