De gustibus. To me, this doesn’t sound like “all those bands we hate”. The tune caught me immediately, it gave me a great mood, big smile on my face since the first riffs. I listened on and on and I can tell a huge superiority over the mainstream on MTV Rocks these days: in the guitar playing (this isn’t grunge!) and in the bass/percussion work. It’s really great and well constructed. I also love the bridges in this song, so typical for Tomahawk.
What’s really weird to me, the vocal part… I like how the chorus doesn’t climb all the “Chino Moreno” way, I like the vocals in the bridges, but it’s so different from anything Patton’s done before (including the Templars this year).
So shortly: I can hardly wait for January!
I love Lovage, like Peeping Tom (just not nearly as much as other Patton records), and will probably have my moments with this album at the very least, but I agree that there are just some cliche sounds on Stone Letter. I do like the Beach Boy ‘cooing’ in the background vocals and Duane’s guitar sound.
I’m very excited about Billy’s House of Hayduk which you can pre-order at Koolarrow. It sounds pretty cool to me. It will only be out on vinyl and there will only be 500 of them.
I’m actually thankful that I’m not alone in thinking it’s pretty… bad. I had a lot of high hopes for the new album, but this song is EVERYTHING that I hate in music – magnified by 100 because it’s by artists that usually impress me. Genre is irrelevant, I listen to just about anything that sounds pleasurable to my ears (somewhat unpopular opinion on this site, but Peeping Tom and Lovage are two distinct Patton-related projects that I enjoy, so much that I’ll sometimes have the urge to listen to each album on and off for a few days.)
But this. This is… pretty much the opposite of what I wanted and expected out of what we can call Patton’s most “generic” rock band right now, though they’re not ACTUALLY generic, just the closest thing to it from a certain standpoint. I think it’s safe to say that I’m not looking forward to the album. Fuck, I’d actually PREFER to hear them cover a bunch of Beach Boys songs than this again. I used to deeply hate criticizing anything Mike did, but now I’m more than okay with admitting that I don’t like something – that shows that I have perspective and I realize that thinking something he made (or helped make) isn’t really up to par with his previous work won’t kill me (or him).
very poppy like diggin´ the grave
You wanna hear disappointing? Wait until the new Soundgarden album comes out.
I’ll take any new rock-like offerings from MP we can get. It’s gonna be better than 90% of the shyte out there these days, especially with no new FNM imminent….At least until the next Matchbox 20 album comes out anyway. ;P
benrun….all good. my apologies for being an ass. Apparently I can get a little defensive in favour of MP. Anyway, hopefully no hard feelings. In e future I willconsider my post more critically before pushing send.
Ti Mort…we were having a friendly conversation about how we feel about the new single, which I thought was what a forum is for…and then you told us all to “shut the hell up”. So I promise not to be a hypocrite…if “shut the hell up” is you expressing your opinion, then you are entitled, but it comes off as you having something against us for expressing ours…so who’s the hypocrite? No hard feelings on my end.
I love the Beach Boys and heavy music…so this could still be really cool. I can’t make it to any of these shows, but my setlist would include lots of Anonymous since they didn’t tour it before…along with GHAC and Capt Midnight of course. I would love to see Aktion 13 if Patton sings it with the electrolarynx…part of my job is teaching patient’s how to use those after a laryngectomee, and it didn’t escape my attention that Patton thanked a speech-language pathologist in the liner notes of Mit Gas. Alot of Patton’s vocal techniques are things I actually have to teach people with different voice disorders (no screaming of course!).
not sure why everyone is so surprised that it’s poppy. Duane said in an interview a long time ago that it’d be the most straightforward album they’ve done and that it sounds like a heavy Beach Boys.
I completely expected something poppy, and I gotta say I like it. if the whole album only consists of songs like this, then I’m worried it might be a bit bland and boring. but something tells me there’ll be enough variety that they’ll keep it fresh throughout. I’m sure we’ll get something that is at least a bit heavier than this one as well, but still I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t nearly as much experimentation as on Mit Gas.
Benrun…don’t be a hypocrite….in making those comments you aren’t allowing me to express myself. Anyway, that’s my angle.
Anybody care to share a fantasy setlist for Tomahawk. PLease be forewarned…I may piss all over your comments. hahaha….kidding.
Lastoknow…agreed…God hates…and Capt midnight are 2 of my all time favs as well.
I think I idolise the man Patton a bit too much and so find it difficult to stomach any criticism of his work. That being said I too was surprised at how mainstream this single sounds, but I also have to say that it doesnt mean I dont like it. However, I do hope the rest of the album is grittier and dirtier than this.
My personal absolute faves from this band are ‘Captain Midnight’, ‘Point and Click’…and of course, ‘God Hates a Coward’. Tomahawk are my favourite non FNM Patton thing, Peeping Tom probably is my least favourite.
I love this.
Even love how Patton is being lazy as hell, talking in that voice (again) for verse sections.
So many songs have this now. Its lazy as hell. But its awesome.
Any moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. How many times has he sung that note now? Genius!
Here we go with not being aloud to have an opinion again. I like the background vocal and the classic Dennison sound, just don’t like the way how it sounds alot like bands that I’ve ignored the last 15 years. I’ll add this, of all the stuff Patton has been involved with, I listen to Peeping Tom the least. I think Patton doing pop only really works well when Roddy is writing it for him.
Fuckin. Christ…..do you all write for the examiner? Shut the hell up and enjoy some new music!!!!!
I’m looking forward to the new album, but I get the feeling that when I want to listen to Tomahawk, I’d rather listen to one of their older songs. But I’m not writing off a straight rock album…I was originally underwhelmed by Anonymous compared to their first 2 albums, but I’ve listened to that 3rd album way more than the others over the years.
Love it. Nice to hear a more straight-ahead rock style from Patton for a change…
I agree Sonny B. Very surprised with the commercial intent. Besides the trademark Tomahawk clicking samples heard it just sounds like many of the bands Patton himself dislikes. I was even thinking it could be ironic but I’m grasping here. Still can’t wait for the full album though. I live in genuine hope, I didn’t really now what to expect from the new album, now I totally don’t have a clue. Some good surprises would be nice.
I really hate to say it, but that was rather disappointing. Sorta pop-punkish and the lyrics were predictable and “poppy.” Patton’s pop influences have become almost self-parody; he’s known for being influence by traditional pop music, but stuff like this is almost like a tribute to modern mainstream pop stars with a rock edge.
The first preview of “Oddfellows” gave me a mental orgasm, this, well… I don’t know. Let’s hope the rest of the album delivers.
Reminds me of the cosmic psychos
