Faith No More have already distributed advance promo copies of Sol Invictus to some lucky media across the world. And some of the lucky few are already tweeting their verdicts.
None more so than Kerrang editor James McMahon who has been raving to his Twitter followers in terms that suggest Sol Invictus really is the Faith No More Second Coming:
So the new @FaithNoMore record is absolutely fucking brilliant!
— James McMahon (@jamesjammcmahon) February 18, 2015
Also, struggling to review the Faith No More record. The best I’ve got so far is, ‘remember how you felt when you first watched Star Wars’ — James McMahon (@jamesjammcmahon) February 23, 2015
@Beez_says Great isn’t it. Album of the year and it’s only February. What a time to be alive
— James McMahon (@jamesjammcmahon) February 23, 2015
Beez, a presenter on UK rock and metal channel Scuzz, has also been tweeting high priase:
Fourth listen to the new Faith No More album. It’s breathtakingly brilliant. How high’s your expectation? Really? It’s better than that. — Beez (@Beez_says) February 20, 2015
@robmcauslan Rob, mate, it’s fully up to the legacy. I have played it 3 times in a row. Can’t remember the last time I did that.
— Beez (@Beez_says) February 20, 2015
NPR and Prog magazine have also reported receiving copies of the album but revealed no more details:
Oh hi new @FaithNoMore album in the inbox — annkpowers (@annkpowers) February 17, 2015

UPDATE
And two more tweets from Beez from Scuzz in reply to this -and the excitement mounts!
@faithnomore20 @FaithNoMore It really is superb.
— Beez (@Beez_says) February 24, 2015
@faithnomore20 @FaithNoMore Sunny Side Up, Matador, Black Friday, Superhero…every track is stunning.
— Beez (@Beez_says) February 24, 2015
i did not like this album much at all except for “matador” and there’s 2 other decent songs on the album. i’ve only listened to it once. maybe i need more time with it as i did a little bit with KFAD and more so with AOTY…needed more listens.
Brilliant album. Come of Shame separation anxiety rise and fall from the dead sunny side up and black Friday the favs
Been a fan since the real thing, multiple plays now in the car on my home system and with headphones at work, it grows on me with every play, Would have loved to catch them on the UK tour but the ticket touts beat me to it
Since I lack all kinds of self-control when it comes to FNM I checked out the album last night. Listening to it now as well. The quality of the rip is pretty bad, but I’m sort of glad it is because when the album actually drops it’ll make listening to it in good quality a new experience in itself.
Not going to say much because it’s too early yet. All I’ll say is that I can sort of understand Dilson and others for pointing out it sounds like some other Patton projects. At times it does, and at first listen the album does something I for a long time was afraid a new FNM album would do: it’s very Patton-eqsue, layered with many of his trademark sounds that came to life after FNM.
That said, there are also parts where it sounds more classic FNM than I could have hoped for. That was my initial reaction to both Superhero and Matador. After a few listens to the first versions of those songs that appeared I found myself thinking “damn, these guys still got it and have managed to cultivate their old sound(s) without a hitch”.
I absolutely love the album and after all I think that this diversity will benefit it in the long run. Time will tell if it’ll become a classic FNM album.
At first, this is anything else but FNM.
This album is more Fantomas or any other Mike Patton side project than FNM, but it’s a good one indeed.
Ahh the collectibles

Only one of these escaped me..
Like i said above – always loved them as a live band , the energy, the unpredictability ..
I guess the world of FNM collectables will continue. I’m guessing the Sol Invictus promo CD (they did send out CDs, right?) will be a future rarity on e-Bay.
From the one video I saw of Cone of Shame, I’m really looking forward to hearing the polished studio version. The song makes me think of the guitar on Guano Padano’s “Prairie Fire” or Patton’s vocals on Book of Knots’ “Planemo” – particularly how the latter builds up and surprises you.
TBH I’m not really impressed (as well) with Motherfucker, and I only like the refrain on Superhero. The verdict’s still out on Matador but I think the release of the studio version, once again, will vindicate it and it will be one of the strongest songs on the new album.
The band is still their same old predictable unpredictable selves… so I think we can expect some more big surprises with how the future releases sound. Maybe country? Or a (gasp!) ballad?
Not a fan of motherfucker at all either(although i bought the vinyl) . Iv never been a fan of the majority of their singles choice .. Iv always preferred them as a live band but as their onstage energy diminishes i think the upcoming album will be one il pay more attention to.
I must say, not being a huge fan of motherfucker…. It as a great opening track for soundwave in Melbourne I now appreciate the song more
Don’t really feel as though I’m less of a fan cause I’m tired of hearing the same tunes they’ve been playing live for 6 years. The band stated they were going to play some different old tunes. I would just like them to change it up is all. But, you keep pontificating champ!!!!
Geez I can’t wait to hear it after reading some of those comments. After hearing Superhero in Adelaide the other night (along with Motherfucker which I must say was a brilliant opening to the show) my expectations have increased. These previews are making me even more excited
Gotcha..
It’s a fan made music video.
Saw that. Pretty sad. Wasn’t he also MEEP in American Horror Story? Too bad. Was that video official?
I took one for the team and accessed that site. There is no file and I know have a blocked credit card. Where is my cone of shame?
US actor Ben Woolf, who featured in Mr. Bungle video for Retrovertigo has died in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle on Thursday night.
@moose – i agree with you .. I’d be happy with the playlist too if i went. As you said as a “diehard” you are thrilled to be at a fnm gig full stop. I’m not fed up with the older material at all but I’m sure some people who might not be as much of a fan are fed up and want the new material .. Me , I’m in no rush. In regards the album i am looking forward to having the physical album in my hand and not too interested in a sub par mp3 copy – I’m quite fussy with my sound quality.
If the album is released early il have it early … Don’t understand your logic there
No worries Ti. We’re all in the same boat here.
their
Furthermore, does this seem a little backwards to anyone else. Not sure why they would have all these dates for an album that isn’t out yet. Then, you go to see the show (for the Sol Invictus tour) and they play songs everyone has already heard. Shouldn’t they be hammering out there new tunes…and doing away with songs like “I started a joke”, “this guy’s in love with you.” I don’t want to hear those tunes…I want the new business. My opinion…but that makes sense, right? Come on people!!!!!
As far as Soundwave goes I was happy with the setlist, and as a diehard fan was thrilled they played Matador as I like the longer songs that build. From the point of view of non fans my girlfriend was amazed with how good faith no more were as she is not really into that kind of music and my 22 year old niece text me last night saying “after all these years of you blabbing about how good they are I finally get it!!….. Best show for the weekend….. My interest has def increased!
So…KingCol, should FNM release the album early are you gonna wait until the 19th of May to listen…give me a break.
Woops….sorry about that admin. Jumped the gun there a little. I won’t post links like that again. Just really want to hear it now. To those of you that would wait…good for you. I myself would not be able to resist temptation. Again, admin my apologies. Won’t happen again.
I’m gonna hold out until I have the physical copy in my hands. Been waiting since 1998, what’s a few more weeks?
Honestly, if it leaked im gonna listen. I’m just too impatient. Sorry. However, I will pre order the vinyl no matter what. And I’d like to be very familiar with the new material when my shows come around in May, which is before the album is officially released.
*dont surface — holy jeez ..
I’m glad the link was taken down .. Fnm is music from a day when you walked into a store to buy your music because you appreciated what you were buying. Iv my vinyl kept aside for when it comes out and i hope the leaks surface
I removed the link as it leads to malware spam. There have been a series of links posted to links like this from YouTube leading to a paid site. I wouldn’t risk my browser or credit card on them.
The antisipation is always ruined ..
Somebody please try it……..
Noooooo wayyyyyyy
So…just for fun I was checking around the web to see if the album has leaked….it appears as though it has.
*sits down with breathing difficulties.
Holy shit on a stick I’m sqeeking with excitement .
This is just torment……reading raving reviews and still have to wait months to get my hands on the new album. But fantastic news that it has been received so well!
I agree Ben. I loved that encore the other night. Wish I was there.
Here are some suggestions of comeback albums. Shows how few have been successful

(Not sure any of these are as good as made out. Bowie’s is ok but not classic Bowie and Portishead is no Dummy)
I hope none of these radio guys who got the promos leak it…I don’t want to be robbed of the experience of getting the music in my hands and playing it for the first time….of course I could always ignore a leak…but I don’t want to have to test my will power.
Daniel…I think they chose I Started A Joke b/c the Bee Gees were Australian, and then if you read all the tweets about Adelaide, people were c/o that they didn’t play As the Worm Turns. In watching the youtube clip, I see that particular encore as one of their best…Mike is singing Joke better than he has since 1995, and Matador sounded better than ever….it’s probably the most emotionally moving song they have in their set now. I agree though that WCAL is a great show closer, but they said themselves they were trying to play songs they didn’t play last time they were there. I get that a festival crowd kind of wants more predictability that a stand alone venue does, but I think that encore was FNM’s version of trying to be crowd-pleasing! I for one love it and am glad someone posted it. I think another problem is that it was a long day. If the goal is to get the crowd jumping one last time, they should probably stick with Ashes to Ashes, Be Aggressive, and WCAL.
Good points. Seems the encores are often tailored for the diehards. Mentioning the Pumpkins and even Soundgarden – has there been a really great comeback album yet from any returning 80s/90s band. Blur have their’s out in April too so we should finally see a classic comeback record this year.
Almost done! .. I mentioned to my brother after Soundwave that they don’t do themselves any favours with the encore at times, and this was before I overheard more than one person say that the encore was a bit of a let-down … I recalled back in 2010 when I had a number of friends join me at Festival Hall in Melbourne – mostly because of my enthusiasm for FNM. The previous night they finished with Stripsearch, As The Worm Turns, This Guy’s In Love With You and finally, We Care A Lot…the crowd left on a massive high bc We Care A Lot is widely known here! .. The Thursday night, they finished with Edge Of The World, Mark Bowen, Switch and Stripsearch … Crowd was noticeably flatter (but still high) and my friends (not FNM fanatics) commented on the poor encore … Perhaps they do it on purpose. Just a point of interest.
*Pumpkins’ 🙂
On a side note, it was interesting comparing the crowd reaction to FNM’s new tunes compared to Smashing Pumpkin’s … When Corgan announced he’d be playing a new song, there were a couple of cheers, a few boos and mostly a lot of murmurs with a noticeable lack of enthusiasm, which was about the same as the response post-new song. When FNM announced they’d be playing a new song (Superhero), there was a genuine positive response. With a bit of egging on from Roddy, it turned into a very loud positive response, and this was the response post-song as well!.. Crowd loved it… So obvious Roddy made a comment about it… On a side note to the side note, it made me wonder if, consequently, they made a late decision to play Matador as well instead of maybe We Care A Lot or Last Cup of Sorrow… To be honest, it wasn’t a great encore for those that aren’t dedicated FNM fans with Matador, I Started A Joke and As The Worm Turns while the aforementioned and far more widely known songs were left out.
Wow!! Having experienced the new tracks at Soundwave and now reading these tweets, I am super excited for the new album. Superhero and MF were great live – better than expected. Matador lacked a bit of something, but I do think that it comes across as a song that needs to be appreciated at home before it can be loved live. Cone of Shame was probably the new song I wanted to see live most of all, but it wasn’t to be. You can already tell that it’d be great to experience it live though, I think.
