Funk metal? Wtf is that? Mate you are way off about me. In short, more words less screaming that’s all. And couldn’t give two fat you know what’s about Jim. I’m not into guitars as much, more rhythm.
Ty, the pattern is that they play their singles. This is what bands do at these performances. Those are the songs the casual listener will be aware of. Hardly any point in playing, say, Anne’s Song, as much as some fans might like them to. Simple as that.
I see from some of your other comments that you have an issue with Patton being involved in the music itself, so I think we’re going to be on different sides here…. That opinion is expressed quite a bit and I don’t agree with it, I’m afraid. Same with the tired old, “It’s not FNM without Jim Martin” rubbish, Patton’s been part of the band for 26 of it’s 30-something years so the guy has more than earned his right to be part of the song-writing process. If you just want to listen to straight-up funk-metal then you’ve missed the boat by a couple of decades.
Digging the grave wasn’t a good choice either!!! A pattern is emerging with their choices to showcase their albums here IMO. Obviously they are not underrated after all, maybe this is what they are.
I’m as critical as anybody of dodgy live performances (especially the recent stream)… but I thought that rendition of Superhero was good! Raw, energetic and pretty tight. For those complaining that it was a poor choice of song, is it really that different from them playing Digging the Grave on these sorts of shows 20 years ago? I don’t think so. Makes sense to play the singles.
Easy should be deleted forever, though!
Superhero sounded great, although levels were a bit iffy as per usual with tv performances.
I agree with others that Easy was a lame choice though. Really a missed opportunity to promote the new album. Would have loved to see Sunny Side Up, Rise of The Fall or Black Friday.
I thought it worked fine. For its edge it remains quite accessible, riff-driven hard rock which translates perfectly well to a TV audience. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘shorter version from last year’, it seems to be the same length as most performances (slightly shorter than the album version) and no more or less screamy. Last time they were on they played the very screamy Midlife Crisis which was against a landscape of shit like Charles & Eddie and Whitney Houston topping the charts, so it’s a bit daft to think they’d care about alienating new listeners today. Remember who we’re talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zkssNzHZwg
The original shorter version from last year was much better. This…patton just screaming for no good reason. No good for tv appearence IMO. Won’t get anyone new to get this album on the strengths of that song. Bad choice. One opportunity to p,ay for a big audience and they muffed it.
Superhero is one song off the new album I prefer live.
Meh. Disappointing really. FfS, easy? Really? And superhero has already run its race so I can’t see the point in promoting the album thru that song which doesn’t translate all that well live anyway. Very disappointed.
Seems like only Easy is available for rewatch at the moment.
All right…now I can’t wait until FNM perfoms Easy on the Tonight Show in 2035…it was indeed a great rendition that holds up against their last visit there, but it’s too bad that Jimmy Fallon wasn’t a bigger fan of that other great FNM cover…I Wanna Fuck Myself…(c’mon since it was online anyway).
Wow! They rocked superhero and easy (online only). Much love from Jimmy.
