Faith No More have confirmed that they will be musical guests on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel on 3 September.
FNM will perform several songs on the show’s outdoor stage in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” airs every weeknight (11:35 p.m.-12:37 a.m., ET) and features a diverse lineup of guests that include celebrities, athletes, musical acts, comedians and human interest subjects, along with comedy bits and a house band.
Speaking of B-sides, I sometimes wonder if they would ever do Hippie Jam Song or The Perfect Crime live.
Awesome tracks, too bad they were not in any regular album….
Okay, if you forced me to do (j/k, I do this for fun), here’s my Top 10 list (album tracks only, Easy doesn’t count as an album track in my world)…
Greed
Jim
Home Sick Home
War Pigs
The Last To Know
Take This Bottle
Arabian Disco
Pills For Breakfast
Collision
Ricochet
J/K, that’s my bottom 10. But keep in mind that if those songs were by some of the other bands I like, they’d probably be in their 10 top. Also, live vs studio is different…most of those songs are awesome live.
The real top 10 (again studio only)…
Midlife Crisis
Why Do You Bother
Anne’s Song
Just A Man
Stripsearch
Rise Of The Fall
The Crab Song
Everything’s Ruined
King For A Day
Cuckoo For Caca
None of the B-sides would make my top 10, but they would fill most of my bottom 10.
Top 10 is a pretty tough grouping for the new songs to crack, given both the strength of their preceding albums at the time and the nostalgic fondness developed for them in the interim. But after a comb-through and being as impartial as I possibly can, I’d honestly say Separation Anxiety makes the grade for me (number 8), whereas nothing from WCAL or TRT quite does. I’m sure there’d be something from all albums if we were talking top 20.
It is a good thing to see that people get something different out of the album. ROTF and SSU seem especially divisive – for me I’ll tend to not listen to them on their own but if I’m listening to the album as a whole I certainly won’t skip them as they just seem to work a lot better as part of the overall experience. But the fact that some people cite them as their favourites of the whole record prove that it was the right choice to include them.
In a sort of perverse way I also rather enjoy the fact that some people are underwhelmed and even hugely disappointed by the album. That to me also proves that they’re doing the right thing, namely not trying to appease for the sake of it. I got into them around the time of KFAD and my waning memory is just about sharp enough to recall that some people online were crestfallen by how that album turned out. Then when AOTY came out some people were won back, others were driven further away. This disharmony has always seemed to be part of the FNM experience, and it’s very possible that when they make the next album (knock wood) I’ll be one of the casualties who doesn’t understand what it is they’re doing. But I genuinely don’t think people are gilding the lily and projecting worth onto this music because they’re in ‘boyband fanboy territory’. For a lot of folks SI really does fire on all cylinders beyond just being a ‘solid comeback’.
In conclusion: Just be thankful they’re back. They can do what they want, they’re legends!
(Sorry)
I think after listening to the album a lot I could easily do without SSU… something about it irks me. The rest of it is solid FNM music – I think ROTF is the ‘best’ track for me
Not sure about top 10 as I do change around the songs from 7 to 15 around depending on mood. SA and ssu are the closest.
Here’s the list of SI songs that score between 8 and 9 out of 10! (There are no 9 pluses)
Sunny Side Up
Separation anxiety
Black Friday
Matador
Cone of shame
Above 7 below 8
Superhero
Rise of The Fall
Sol Invictus
Below 7
Motherfucker
From The Dead
Nice idea for a thread Lance…as I said, for me it’s Rise of the Fall. The peak of that song I think is the most musically and vocally intense the band have ever been, it’s high drama, and there’s so many cool little things going on in that song. While it does mash up well in parts with Blood as BenM pointed out, I still think it stands apart from most other FNM songs, in a good way, but then most of the SI tracks do. Separation Anxiety and Superhero have the feel of past tracks the most, but then when you compare them to some AD tracks they are really good, but I wouldn’t say better. Black Friday is still a song I love, like I said I love the whole album. That track has a great Leonard Cohen cruising down a highway feel. For me, the clapping is what really helps the song shine. That, and I think it’s a good example of where you have a pretty good song but what Patton decides to do with it gives it a whole different vibe that makes it stick in your mind. For MFer, I kind of feel like the payoff at the end after the build up should be a little longer and meatier, otherwise, I love the analogy the lyrics are making. But MFer worked really well live. I love Matador too but I feel like it should be a little more cohesive in it’s lyrics and it just doesn’t have quite enough punch or beauty to crack my top 10….but it’s real close. Having said all this, the songs I’ve listened to the most on the album (not counting the thousand times I listened to the singles before the album dropped) are the opener and the closer…when I’m in a rush, I can listen to those 2 and imagine all the other great songs in between.
I gotta say now that everyone on here has had enough time with the sol invictus album do any of the songs on it crack your top ten? For me it’s matador. Benrun I love Black Friday but that’s what makes faith no more so great is one person’s least favorite song is anothers favorite song. Anyone else on here have sol invictus songs in their top ten?
Bob, that’s fine you feel that way, but I don’t really see why you shoul be bothered if I did in fact love every song of theirs. I don’t, but I do love every song on SI. It is not groundbreaking, but well thought out and I think they’ve written some real interesting songs. For me, Rise of the Fall is in their top 10 (the rest of my list includes Midlife, WDYB, Anne’s Song, Just A Man, Stripsearch, Crab Song, Real Thing, Cuckoo, KFAD…you get the idea). Yes, I’ve given this a lot of thought. If that makes me a fanboy then fine…this is my favorite band since I was 10. There really isn’t any other band that I like enough to write comments on the internet about, but I do like a lot of other different music. I think The Cowboy Song blows, as does that small snippet of The Seagull Song, most of The Real Thing album to me has really boring guitar parts, some of the WCAL album is hit and miss as is AOTY, but I think both are better than TRT. IY, AD, and SI are pretty damn near perfect to me, with KFAD right behind. Black Friday and MFer are the least great songs on SI to me, but everyone’s different. So….are you still bothered? If so, I don’t get it but it makes me think you might get bothered by random things that maybe aren’t worth getting bothered over. I love FNM, I don’t care if anyone else does or loves them too much or ‘the wrong way’.
Good to get a dissenting view
One of the things that bugs me is when fans claim to love all the songs-benrun…unless you really mean it? It really takes fans from genuine, interested, but real fan into boyband fanboy territory.
I like SI, it’s not groundbreaking, and no track stands out to be in their top 10, but in 10 years it will be viewed as a solid comeback record. I read a lot about people describing Matador as epic and classic, but it’s not for myself, and the casual rock/metal fans I’ve forced the album on. It’s long, builds and broods, but that doesn’t = killer track. For me, Black Friday is the best track on the album, but isn’t replicated well live.
It’s easy to get into the “just be thankful they’re back/they can do what they want, they’re legends” territory, but that is an awful, depressing argument.
But hey, opinions!! And they’re my fav band ever, disclaimer. Cheers for great work as ever Admin and the regular commenters for good discussion.
Benrun
Haha, a very funny cover indeed. I’m a completest as well so I’m hoping the band give it a full release soon. But mostly I would love for them to release the Maida Vale sessions in CD format.
Thanks Ty, I didn’t know about that website. I like the picture for the cover, pretty funny going with the song’s title. I’m fairly completist when it comes to FNM so I’m going to have to be on the lookout for this promo, and the Superhero radio edit promo. I think I have just about everything else on there except for originals of the Faith No Man cassette.
To benrun
Go to discogs.com , get on Faith No More page of singles -and promos and there you will see the ssu single cover. It’s definitely got a cover but only one track.
I didn’t know there was a physical copy of SSU, is it just a promo disc for radio stations like the Superhero radio edit?
To benrun
Yes, those shows were the pro shots I would have preferred. Maybe even release the Madia Vale performance of SSu as the official video. Really perplexed as to why the band released Ssu they way they did. It needed more ‘Buzz’ as the band don’t get automatic radio AirPlay like in the 90’s! I have seen the physical copy online and the cover is slightly disappointing because I really wanted to collect everything about this album, with similar themes from cover to cover of all singles plus remixes or B sides or something. I did read that Gould mention not long ago that a video is getting made, but I’m not sure if he meant the Detroit pro shots but I’m going to take a guess and say that Black Friday seems to be a favorite of the bands so that may be the next proper single.
As for Rise, well, I am on and off with that song but along with BF it is the song I’ve listen to the most. I love the rhythm faux – chorus section, it reminds of TRT days but still trying to come around with the last 90 seconds of the songs structure. I think it had the makings of been their biggest hit yet it’s so off kilter! Separation Anxiety, ssu, Cone , Matador and BF are my faves.
Ty, that’s funny, I love all the tracks, but I would also say that the 2 singles stand out the least 2 me. That may be that I played them a thousand times before the album finally dropped, but it’s also that they are the most accessible and the FNM songs that always hit me the best are maybe less accessible. Both songs are a lot of fun though and I still agree with the band’s choices to put them out. Motherfucker to me has the same kind of construction as WCAL, Epic, Midlife Crisis in the popiness, catchy choruses, guitar finish and was an interesting way to announce a comeback with a single that couldn’t be actually uttered on the radio. Superhero makes sense after MFer to satisfy fans that it was going to include some all out rock on there. Plus, as much as I may not favor them on the album the most, they were probably the best live of the bunch I got to see (didn’t see Matador though). The songs are really great in a live audience. Just like Surprise You’re Dead is usually an album track that I skip, it kind of stole the show live. My favorite song on the album is Rise of the Fall which looks like the trickiest to pull off. I do really wish more people could get exposed to SSU…it is a great track and could pull in some new fans I think. And it bothers me that people chalk it up to Patton singing about his breakfast! It’s possibly the saddest song on the album, the hopefulness despite the loss, dangling on the edge of an emotional cliff…if it is about eating at all, it’s about eating your feelings.
Did you see the vids for Pinkpop and Helfest? Those shows were well shot. Good takes on Black Friday on there, that song reminds me a lot of Leonard Cohen.
Benrun
Okay mate, I get your point fully. Yes the album is good, the only songs I’m not all that into are the two singles! Dunno why, but I just can’t like them that much and much preferred the band to push ssu and maybe BF instead. Anyway, I am happy to see the band enjoying their comeback but not too fussed if they release another album or not. I was hoping a better pro shot performance vids as well but they are not the million selling band like in the 90’s I guess.
On the singles release discussion…the traditional point of a single is to get it on the radio but good luck doing that from an independent record label. Except for the occasional play on an oddball XM station, it’s not going to happen. Even the “independent” label songs you do hear on the radio are subsidiaries of major labels. If they were still on Warner brothers they would have definitely had some play. The singles they have released are for the fans and the videos and TV appearances are a small label doing some pretty good marketing for what they have to work with. I think it works a little different in Europe where they are more popular and things aren’t quite so mainstream.
Finally got vinyl today! It’s been a long time coming.
I’m confused Ty about the ‘milking the cow’ comment you made but see your other points maybe. But I think the album is great, really better than great, and am glad they did a lot of shows…this is what the majority of fans wanted. I love the 2 singles that had an actual product with a B-side remix (both of which were really cool). So maybe I can see your point about the effort made on SSU. They probably could use a little help trying to do this stuff while also touring. And I would agree that unless they have something to add to a single, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to put it out when it’s probably not going to get much airplay (I don’t know if the other songs did or not, I don’t listen to any radio stations). They probably only had rights to the pro-shot Detroit show as part of their deal with Yahoo. I think they did very well for themselves doing press all over the world though, I’m sure that helped album sales, numbers which the band seem pretty happy with. So I’m just confused on what you would rather they had done, as BenM seems to be saying. I know Billy wants to tour next year, but I’d be surprised if they do and would prefer they get back in the studio and flesh out those other songs before they do any more touring. It seems that will depend on A) Patton putting vocals to the songs, and B) Roddy had said that they would probably do totally new songs if they were to record another album since the leftover songs feel a part of a different time and vibe. I hope he’s both right and wrong….I want to hear his “Kashmir” song, but new songs are always welcome.
Benm
Are you serious? Why on earth would they release those shonky videos? Tell me, I’m all ears? The performances aren’t even that good, there are better ones but that’s actually not the point, the point is what the funk are they for? No one cares other than a handful of people who bought the record !!! I say, don’t worry about vids or singles at all! The album is Not great but still a solid collection of songs . I don’t think it was ever going to sell big or it was going to be an album choc full of hits..motherfucker flattened that from the start. I’m sorry but your response makes me think you understood exactly what I was saying about ‘milking the cow’ hell, Patton’s the one eating those very words. They will tour until the end of next year because of MONEY talks! No problem with that but please no more so so videos or faux singles without B- sides or even albums. This is enough imo.
Admin, can we redo the Sol Invictus poll now that we’ve heard all the tracks? Rise is my favorite song!
@Ty I’m still just happy they’re back. Seriously. 1998-2009 – there was a lot of great music released. But to me, there was always a bit of a void because FNM were not there. As good as all the side projects were, there is something special about this group of guys. I’m just glad they are back recording and touring and I pray they go apeshit releasing more music.
I personally hope they don’t waste any time or money making a video…what’s the point really? Do videos really do anything for anyone? If the 5 of them are in the same space at the same time (besides when on tour), I would rather they would be either having fun or having fun working on more music.
I personally have no complaints on anything…awesome new music from FNM this year with a way bigger tour than I ever thought they would do (and it’s still going), and it seems the response is as good as could be expected. It looks like Patton has been having a good time and that this band will keep going in a big enough way that Jon won’t have to return to real estate!
I’m also happy with the fact that I got 2 new songs from Chuck Mosley this year that just blow me away…that last one “Hard Drivin Rock Tune” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in years and it seems to have not gotten any attention.
My personal FNM wish would be for them to put out an EP soon with totally uncharacteristic songs (like Songs To Make Love To was) and include some of the covers they did on the reunion tour (Que Hacado and Adje Jano).
You’re right, what disingenuous bastards. How dare they do it on their own terms by focusing on writing great new music and touring heavily, thus giving fans (particularly Stateside ones who missed out on much of the prior reunion tour) exactly what they want and being financially compensated for it appropriately. Since when is that what music’s about, eh?
No more love from me until they dress up like the characters from Rear Window and do enough new videos to justify the release of BluRay Croissant.
Seriously, you’re all over the map. You’re annoyed because they’ve sidestepped a traditional marketing route yet your main criticisms are of when they occasionally incorporate the traditional approaches said route would call for, such as playing their hits on national television and spreading awareness through social media. I genuinely don’t think you know what you’re annoyed about.
Ty, how has the promotion “sucked balls”, exactly? Have you seen the number of reviews “Sol…” has had? The many, many articles and interviews? Far more than most of the other bands you mention, certainly. FNM has generally gained more coverage than ever before with this go around (leaving aside their main commercial years).
I’m not some brainless fanboy but I fail to see exactly what else they should/could be doing (especially at this stage of their lives). What are they missing, as far as you’re concerned?
And as an aside… they’re not going to go on Kimmel and play “Absolute Zero” or “Jizzlobber.” Why do people get annoyed when a band plays it’s recent singles and/or best known songs?
Sunny side up has been the single since mid June, but just like the other singles, it has been virtually ignored. Plus the videos are quite boring, amateurish and the whoLe promotion of this record has sucked balls really…bit like soundgarden , Alice in chains, nin, smashing pumpkins etc.. It’s all about touring and milking the cash but to save face these bands release half arsed efforts making it seem like they are BACK!! Let me guess what they gonna play on Kimmel?? Superhero and Easy! Pfftnk. Ok I’m in a weird mood.
What’s with FNM’s twitter about Sunny Side Up? Is it out as single?
Well…unless they pause to finish another album. I’m really eager to see what they cone up with next
Awesome…looking forward to it
Can’t wait…Don’t want the tours and various stops to end.
