Links for a day…(vol. 142): Faith No More feature heavily in 2015 preview lists

January 6th, 2015|Faith No More, Links for a day, News|5 Comments

Faith No More feature in a lot of “most anticipated albums of 2015” lists. Here’s a quick summary of what the critics expect:

In the illustrious company of Kid Rock among others, Faith No More are on Yahoo’s list of 10 albums to look out for. They say: ” Fans have been eagerly anticipating a new Faith No More album since the group reunited in 2009 to start touring again. So far, they’ve released one song, “Motherf—er,” an odd number that sounds vaguely like a cross between early Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, and Puscifer.”

Rolling Stone include Faith No More at number 40 in their chronological 68 Reasons This Year Will Rule. The rock bible states: “The as-yet-untitled collection, which arrives in April via the group’s own Reclamation label, reportedly bears the influence of the Cramps, Link Wray, Siouxsie and the Banshees and, possibly, Balkan saxophone king Ferus Mustafov. Which all bodes well, as does its first single, the sarcastic, hard-stomping “Motherfucker.”

Meanwhile, HitFix state: “The as-yet-titled set will be released through Faith No More’s own label Reclamation Recordings and is preceded by the single “Motherf*cker.” Take that for a comeback.”

The band get labelled a “budding heritage act” by the Sydney Morning Herald but fellow Australians Triple J include FNM in their top 20 list and state: “The first we’ve heard of the rock veterans’ first new music in 17 years has been the swampy, sweary ‘Motherf***er’, which only served to remind us how beautifully strange and creatively heavy they can be”. More antipodean love too from Tone Deaf, who have the band alongside Tame Impala and Napalm Death in their list: “An epidemic of cardiac arrests ensued when they unveiled their first single in nearly two decades, Motherfucker. That’s a lot of pressure to live up to, but if anyone can, it’s the twisted minds behinds some of the most unique and treasured metal records ever made. We’re ready to laugh, we’re ready to cry, we’re ready to cower, and we’re ready to bang our heads once again, all before the opening track is through”. And Aussie site Faster Louder also has the band in its list.

Consequence of Sound also have the album in their 50-strong list, declaring that “vicious sound and snarling wolf cover for new single “Motherfucker” announced the Bay Area five-piece’s return to the studio in properly intense fashion”. Stereogum, meanwhile, put the band at 33 in their list of 101 albums for 2015.

French site Musique Mag also have FNM have one of their picks but keep to the factual in their summary.

Gibson also include the untitled FNM record in their top 5 stating: “The upcoming, as-yet-untitled studio album will be the band’s first since 1997, so it’s pretty impossible to figure out what to expect from the new tunes. That makes the anticipation even more intense. Can’t. Wait”. From the ultimate guitar to Ultimate Guitar and the rock mag have Faith No More at 15 in their list of 15.

Faith No More’s other new songs: Superhero and Matador

November 20th, 2014|Faith No More, News|3 Comments

We’ve finally heard new recorded music from Faith No More and it has only whetted our appetites.

Motherfucker is released as a 7-inch vinyl on 28 November and digitally on 9 December.

But what then? The new album will be released in April 2015 but there is likely to be a second single before then

The odds are on the other two new songs that the band have played live – the brooding Matador and the lively Superhero.

Here we revisit our overview of the two new songs.

Superhero

Go Go Go Go….

There’s something wrong
Hiding in a cave…

Leader of men
Leader of men
Locked in your cage
Will you be one of them?

?????

Superhero
Superhero

Leader of men
It’s all in your head
It’s all in your head
Sweet memories
Washing away

And here for the sake of completion is the band playing Matador again at Open’er on Saturday:

When lonesome came over me
A future shadow
Her ghost stood there, sang to me
Farewell, so long

I’ll awake you
From this living sleep
We’ll walk the shore
Where you were born
And bedded me

Although I cheat for the things
March forward, my son
A battle beyond frozen hills
Only for doubters

We will rise from the killing floor
Like a matador

The stained glass
A bovine ass
Can see right through
Every truth-soaked lie

Letters will trace every step
Out of this world
With every date, every date

We will be where you will be no more
No more

The stained glass
Or the hangman’s ass
Would serve you well
Now we’re comin’ back

Out of the words
Of these ghosts
We’ll jump the gates
And left to rise, we will rise

We will rise from the killing floor
Like a matador

And the dead live
May the dead live
And the dead live
What more can we give?

May the dead live
May the dead live
And the dead live
The dead live…

The digital release of Faith No More‘s comeback single Motherfucker may not be until 9 December but the song has already charted on iTunes in some countries, based on pre-order sales alone.

In Poland, the song is number 26 in the overall iTunes song chart, nestled cosily just behind Meghan Trainor and her All about that Bass. And it is NUMBER ONE in the rock category.

All about that Bass Motherfucker

In Romania, Motherfucker is number 3 in the rock category – with Shakin’ Stevens bizarrely at number 2.

In Finland, meanwhile, the song is number 6 in the rock category.

In the Netherlands, the song is 38 in the iTunes rock chart.

And Motherfucker is at number 93 in the overall Bulgarian iTunes chart. The song is also number 2 in the rock category  – beaten off the top spot only by Nickelback!!

Faith No More have 25 songs to choose from for new album

November 4th, 2014|Faith No More, News|9 Comments

Bill Gould has given an interview to Revolver magazine revealing fresh details on the forthcoming comeback Faith No More album.

He said: “It’ll be much different than everything else out there—but that’s sort of the point. It’s a combination of what we don’t hear in the outside world and what we feel is lacking from other bands. And in the end, it will sound like Faith No More.”

Revolver stated: “The first official single is “Motherfucker,” an offbeat track driven by marching drums, spare piano, echoey string scrapes, and half-sung vocals layered over a euphoric chorus. The song will be released as a limited-edition 7-inch single for Record Store Day Black Friday on November 28. Another track, “Cone of Shame,” is “blues-based rock and roll,” according to the bassist, with some “influences from Link Wray, Cramps, and a little black metal.” But Gould’s favorite song is still “Matador.” ”

The band could have as many as 25 songs to choose from.

The album will be released in April 2015.

Exciting words from Bill – what are you expecting from the new album?

Record Store day starts promoting Faith No More Motherfucker release

October 23rd, 2014|Faith No More, News|1 Comment

The countdown to the release of Faith No More‘s first single since 1998 has begun in earnest with Record Store Day including the details of the release of Motherfucker on their release list on their site.
(Here is a Rolling Stone story on all releases)

The only new information is that the release will be a Black Friday First Release, which means that it will be “available first at indie record stores but will be available at other retailers at some point.” However, with a limited release of just 500 copies, it is unlikely that the record will ever be widely available.

Full details here and in pic below

The B-side will be a remix by Australian composer/producer/performer J G Thirlwell of Foetus, who has previously remixed work by Pantera, Nine Inch Nails and the Red Hot Chilii Peppers. In addition, Mike Patton has previously remixed a Foetus track How to Vibrate:

Bill Gould speaks about new Faith No More album

September 2nd, 2014|News|3 Comments

Bill Gould has spoken extensively to Rolling Stone about the new Faith No More album which will be released in April 2015:
When asked how the new record sounds he said:
“I mean… [Laughs.] What I can say is that I think through our experience as musicians over the years, I think what we’re doing reflects where we’ve gone since we made our last record as Faith No More. I think this kicks things up a notch. And I think there’s parts that are very powerful and there’s parts that have a lot of “space.” Everything we do, with our chemistry, the way we play; it’s always going to sound like us. It’s just what we do, that makes us feel good. Hopefully it doesn’t sound like a bunch of 50-year-old men… which we are! ”

bassist Bill Gould has broken the band’s media silence by speaking to Classic Rock magazine about the prospect of new music from the band. He told the September issue of the magazine: “We’re considering doing something new. We’re not going to go into a room and bang a bunch of songs just to put something out, it has to be right.”

We won’t include the whole piece for copyright reasons but he also stated in the Ultimate Autumn Preview section of the magazine: “I think we still have a lot of potential to do really good things, and I think our heads, musically speaking, are in a really good space.”

Faith No More’s new songs: Superhero, Motherf*cker, Matador lyrics and video

July 7th, 2014|Faith No More, News|24 Comments

Faith No More
‘s return to the stage after two years in London and Poland on Friday and Saturday could not have been more exciting for fans of the band. FNM premiered two new songs, giving their strongest hint yet that they are working on new material and bring the prospect of a first album since 1997’s Album of the Year tantalisingly closer.

The band, who previously teased new song Matador in late 2011, played Superhero and Motherfucker and both shows on their mini-European tour.

Both new tracks feature delicate melodies, prominent keyboards and multiple vocals, with Roddy taking most of the vocal duties on Motherfucker. Since the songs aired, fans have noticed Peeping Tom influences, the call-and-response nature of the Superhero evoking their pre-Patton work and have attempted to decipher the lyrics.

Here is our attempt to transcript some of the lyrics, along with the best of the videos of the songs. Please free to add your own versions in Comments.

Motherfucker

Force fed more than we eat in the wild
Raised on a mash that can suffocate a child
Goaded, promoted in a ??? pocket style
Munching in the field while we’re choking on the bile
Corner the the muck of the geese without phones
Hushing down the public on a street without a home
……………………………………
Get the mother fucker on the phone
(repeat)

Hello Motherfucker
My lover
You had it coming
Get the motherfucker on the phone
Set aside the scruples and the strategies and the strain

A smallpox- laden blanket invisible with stains
Inoculated bastards , bloody pecked at pain
Distemper has a hold
Distemper has a hold
We took a second sip from a cup we made of bones
The first it was a ruse, a trick so aptly grown
The truth is that our youth was a carpet laid with stones

Get the mother fucker on the phone (repeat)
Hello Motherfucker
My lover
You had it coming

Superhero

Go Go Go Go….

There’s something wrong
Hiding in a cave…

Leader of men
Leader of men
Locked in your cage
Will you be one of them?

?????

Superhero

Leader of men
It’s all in your head
